Netflix's recently released documentary, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey, delved into the murder of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey in 1996. Over the years, various suspects emerged, giving the case new twists in the investigation process. Among them was John Brewer Eustace whose link to a similar crime made him a suspect.
Eustace, 31 at the time, was arrested in North Carolina. Netflix's series gave a glimpse of the investigation that led to his connection with the Ramsey case and what law enforcement finally concluded.
Authorities found that Eustace was a drifter. His name appeared in JonBenét Ramsey's murder because of an appalling crime he committed in Charlotte, North Carolina. He kidnapped a two-year-old girl in 1997 and was eventually found to have a scrapbook of clippings about the Ramsey family. There was an appearance of similarities in entry techniques in both cases.
While this was enough for the focus of investigators on these methods, Eustace was exonerated from JonBenét Ramsey's murder after investigation. He now serves a long prison term in North Carolina for his other criminal activities.
The documentary came as a three-part film directly to Netflix on 25 November 2024.
John Brewer Eustace and his relation to the JonBenét Ramsey case
As shown in the documentary, John Brewer Eustace was a California man who drifted around the states. He had a wayward life, traveling and laboring from state to state. In March 1997, he hit the headlines when he turned himself in at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County police station. It was just days after abducting two-year-old Elizabeth Bradwell from her mother's basement.
He divulged that, indeed he had broken out the residence of Bradwell by dismantling a window screen that he abducted a young girl, carried her in custody for some time, and then took her to a neighbor's yard. After this, an investigation was conducted, starting with a search at Eustace's home. Police found his scrapbook mainly on Ramseys, which included only JonBenét.
This discovery led authorities to go ahead with one prevailing theory in JonBenét's case that an intruder had entered her home through the basement window. Boulder police quickly traveled to North Carolina to question Eustace about his potential involvement in JonBenét's murder.
Why was John Brewer Eustace cleared as a suspect?
While the similarities between the two cases seemed compelling at first, further investigation showed no connection between Eustace and JonBenét Ramsey's murder. Authorities found that Eustace had a solid alibi. His timecard presence at his workplace, and records showed he was there during the time of Ramsey's death.
In addition, DNA found at the crime scene was not of Eustace. The investigators thus removed Eustace from their list of suspects. The possession of the scrapbook did not, therefore, make him a suspect in the Ramsey case.
However, in Charlotte case, Eustace was charged with the offense of first-degree burglary, kidnapping, ra*e, a first-degree se*ual offense, as well as multiple counts of indecent liberties with a child.
