The upcoming episode of NBC's famed true crime show, Dateline, is all set to cover the case of John Peek, who murdered two of his wives for their respective insurance money. Though the murderer nearly got away with it the first time, when he killed his common-law wife, Carol Marlin, he could not pull the feat a second time and was eventually arrested and punished for his crimes.
The upcoming episode of Dateline, titled Deadly Omission, is set to cover this case in detail. The brief synopsis for this episode, as per NBC, reads:
"A woman's murder shines a light on an unsolved mystery from years earlier. As the connection between the two cases becomes clear, a long-hidden truth surfaces."
After John Peek murdered his second wife, Kasi Peek, the police were able to connect the dots and finally linked him to the earlier murder, for which they suspected Peek but did not prosecute for a lack of physical evidence.
He was ultimately sentenced to life in prison for three murders, one of them being his first wife, Carol's colleague, who happened to be with her when he killed her. He was handed out three life sentences for his crimes, which he continues to serve in Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, Georgia.
What did John Peek do?
John Peek was an IT worker at Lockheed Martin living in Marietta, Georgia. He was with 46-year-old Carol Marlin at the time, who worked in the same company as a program planner. On the night of June 13, 1996, Peek reported his wife missing. Marlin allegedly went out with a 64-year-old colleague, Margaret Ginn, and never came back.
As the police began investigating, they soon arrived at Ginn's residence, where they found Marlin unresponsive in the dining room and Ginn also unresponsive in the bedroom. Both of them were murdered. Both victims were bludgeoned to death. Marlin seemed to be beaten with purpose as her head was smashed in brutally.
The police soon questioned Peek, who claimed that he’d grabbed a meal from a fast food chain and went home on the night his wife went missing. He also vaguely mentioned a threatening letter that some Lockheed Martin employees allegedly received.
Investigators found some scattered clues that pointed at John Peek. They also found out that Carol Marlin made John Peek the primary beneficiary of her $700,000 life insurance policy weeks prior to her death. Despite the strong suspicion, the lack of any physical evidence meant that this case wasn't pursued further.
This was until another murder took place. On October 2, 2005, the police received a call from Smyrna. They went there to find Kasi Peek dead from a gunshot wound to the back. The murder scene also seemed to be staged so that it would be considered a robbery attempt.
This time, John became the primary suspect because it was the second time the same thing was happening. The final nail in the coffin was when investigators found a letter showing that John was double paying Kasi’s insurance to ensure it wouldn’t be canceled. This was enough evidence to arrest and charge John.
Where is John Peek now?
Before his trial, John was charged with three counts of murder, which was enough to sentence him to death. To avoid this, he pleaded guilty to all three murders. He was sentenced to three life sentences without the possibility of parole to be served concurrently.
He remains in the Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, Georgia, where he will remain till his death.
