A convicted drug dealer, Kevin Saxon from New York City, made headlines for his criminal activities, including murder. His story is featured in Netflix’s true-crime series I Am a Killer, which delves into the lives of convicted criminals reflecting on their actions.

The series I Am a Killer season 6 was released on January 8, 2025, on Netflix and is directed by Itamar Klasmer. The story of Kevin Saxon is narrated in episode 6, titled Choices.

Kevin Saxon, hailing from Harlem, was involved in multiple violent crimes, including the 1990 stabbing of fellow inmate Terrence T-Lo Smith and the 2000 shooting of drug dealer Richard Gaines.

In June 2002, he was convicted of second-degree murder and other charges, receiving a 109-year prison sentence without the possibility of parole. As of now, Kevin Saxon remains incarcerated at the Five Points Correctional Facility in New York, serving his life sentence.

Kevin Saxon, now 54, is serving his sentence at Five Points Correctional Facility in New York. On June 11, 2002, he was found guilty of second-degree murder and drug-related charges. He received a 109-year sentence without parole.

According to the report of the New York State Unified Court, Prosecutors said he was a threat to the neighborhood, having caused fear for years, and argued that he should stay in prison.

Saxon has appealed his conviction, admitting to his crimes but saying his actions were influenced by his circumstances. He believes he deserves a chance to change and apply for parole. However, since he won't be eligible for parole until 2098, he'll likely remain in prison until further changes.

Kevin Saxon was born in Harlem, New York, on May 1, 1970. He grew up in the Lincoln Projects area, surrounded by crime and drugs. As per the Netflix documentary, his mother was an alcoholic, and thus he was sent to live with his grandparents who were the only positive influence in his life.

However, around six or seven years of age, his father took him to another place where he allegedly faced physical and mental abuse.

By his teenage years, Saxon was involved in petty crimes. In 1986, at 16, he was arrested for robbery and sent to juvenile detention for 11 months. After his release, he joined a drug gang operating in his neighborhood. In 1989, he was arrested for his role in a shooting related to the gang. His time at Rikers Island was harsh, but he befriended fellow inmate Terrence T-Lo Smith.

In 1990, an altercation with T-Lo led to a fatal stabbing. Saxon was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He had a wife and son at the time and tried to reform during his incarceration. He was released on parole in 1999, determined to turn his life around.

The Murder of Richard Gaines

Kevin Saxon said his ex-wife was struggling financially, and he wanted to give his son everything he never had. This led him back into the drug trade, where money and power quickly took over his life. In September 2000, Saxon got into an argument with another drug dealer, Richard Gaines, over a comment about money.

He had known Gaines for a long time and didn't expect things to escalate, but the argument got heated. When Gaines challenged Saxon in front of his son, Saxon felt deeply disrespected.

On September 18, 2000, Saxon saw Gaines while driving and decided to confront him. He got out of his car and shot Gaines twice, intending to scare him. Unfortunately, Gaines died from his injuries. On May 22, 2001, Saxon was arrested on drug charges, and the police had already linked him to Gaines's murder.

As the case developed, a news report suggested that Saxon killed Gaines because they were rivals and that this wasn't his first attempt. Saxon denied these claims, saying it was an accident and he never meant to kill Gaines.
