Case overview
On November 30, 2016, Lexington resident Kimberly Fletcher Groh dialed 911, claiming that her husband, Michael Bryan, had unintentionally shot himself with a .223 Winchester rifle. She said she was attempting to move the gun off the bed when it somehow discharged.
Michael was shot in the chest with a single bullet as he was sitting upright on the bed. Kimberly provided inconsistent statements about the circumstances, which directed the suspicion towards her.
As per The State, Steven Derrick, a former South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agent, testified that blood spatter evidence and crime scene analysis contradicted Kimberly's claims. This analysis indicated that she was standing at the foot of the bed when she fired the fatal shot. Kimberly Fletcher Groh's DNA was found on the rifle's trigger, while no traces of Michael's DNA were detected.
The investigators found plastic baggies containing temazepam sedative in the purse of Kimberly. This was analyzed, and there was a residue of temazepam found in food containers from the meal prepared by Kimberly for Michael at night when the shooting took place. This evidence indicated that she had doped him before the shooting.
Incriminating internet searches
The prosecutors had presented evidence from Kimberly Fletcher Groh's iPhone and computer that had shown internet searches done weeks before Michael's death.
The search phrases included, among others: 'Ways to poison spouse without detection,' 'Top Ten Most Deadly Poisons Known to Mankind,' 'Buy Zyklon B,' 'How much arsenic will kill a human?' and 'Load a.223 rifle.' The search phrases indicated some level of premeditation and therefore were of importance in helping build up the prosecution's case.
The motive and financial evidence
After Michael's death, Kimberly tried to collect the $500,000 life insurance policy in his name. Though her lawyer claimed that she was only taking procedural steps, prosecutors found it as a motive for committing the crime.
Kimberly’s actions after the murder, combined with the financial element, painted a picture of a calculated plan. Her attorney emphasized her work in the community and her grief, but the court deemed the evidence sufficient for conviction.
Kimberly Fletcher Groh’s current status
In 2021, Kimberly pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received a 30-year prison term. This plea reduced the charge of murder, and in doing so, it was able to spare both families from the emotional burden of a trial. Kimberly had been under house arrest for four years before her sentencing.
