The upcoming episode of 20/20 on ABC is all set to cover the brutal murder of Robert Doerr, a veteran firefighter, who was shot to death by Larry Richmond Sr., who, in turn, was having an affair with his wife at the time. The case remains one of the most chilling instances in the history of Evansville.
The upcoming episode of 20/20 on ABC, titled Fire and VIce, will cover this case in detail when it airs at 9.00 PM EST on November 8, 2024. The synopsis for the episode reads:
"A heart-pounding body-camera video captures moments after a firefighter is gunned down; a family drama unfolds in real time as police hunt for the killer."
Larry Richmond Jr., who had a prior criminal record, was arrested shortly after the murder and charged. While Becky Fox-Doerr, the wife of Robert, has already been sentenced, Larry is still awaiting his trial. He is currently incarcerated at Evansville Parole District waiting to prove his innocence, which he still maintains to this day.
Who is Larry Richmond Sr. and what did he do?
Larry Richmond Sr. is a former convict who pleaded guilty to the 1996 shooting death of 70-year-old James Everett Montgomery. He was only 17 at the time and he received a 45-year sentence. He was released over 20 years later. While still on probation, he was also connected to Robert Doerr's death.
Robert Doerr, a veteran firefighter, was shot multiple times outside his home in Evansville on the night of February 26, 2019. His wife, Becky, contacted the police and seemed inconsolable at the loss but soon the police found out that she was allegedly having an affair. They also soon found evidence that Larry Richmond Sr., was linked to her. He was also engaged to Mandy Fillmore, Becky's sister, at the time.
The police got especially suspicious when they found that Becky had talked to Larry minutes before Robert Doerr was shot and she had deleted this call from the log.
So authorities soon began realizing that Larry Richmond Jr. was allegedly having an affair with Becky Fox-Doerr, and the two decided to murder Robert Doerr to get him out of the way and perhaps also lay claim to his pension benefits from the Fire Department.
How was Larry Richmond Sr. caught?
Larry Richmond Sr.'s son, Larry Richmond Jr., became instrumental in solving the case. He revealed that he had seen his father and Becky kissing outside the Doerr residence. He also revealed that he had stolen a Taurus Judge revolver from a pawn shop that he gave to his father.
This was the same weapon that was used to murder Robert Doerr. Moreover, Larry was spotted burying a box of guns in the backyard of his property. He was prohibited from owning any weapons due to his prior conviction. This led to his arrest. He pleaded guilty to federal firearm charges and was sent to prison.
During his stint in prison, he confessed to a fellow prisoner, who turned out to be a police informant. Despite this, there was no particular physical evidence linking him to the crime. Finally, in 2021, the police were able to find more evidence in the form of Larry's phone location, which confirmed that he was around Robert's house during the time of the murder.
He was soon charged with the murder. He pleaded not guilty. Currently, Larry Richmond Sr. is waiting for his trial, which was pushed back from August 2024. He remains jailed at Evansville Parole District. The prosecutors will reportedly try to get a life sentence for him.
