Lewis Lent is a convicted murderer found guilty of killing two children in Massachusetts and New York, including 12-year-old Sara Anne Wood whose body remains undiscovered.

CBS's 48 Hours will chronicle the case of Sara Anne Wood's murder in its upcoming episode The Unending Search for Sara Anne Wood which premieres on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS and also on Paramount Plus for streaming.

Who is Lewis Lent and where is he now?

Sara Anne Wood was only 12 when she was last seen making a short trek home from Vacation Bible School in the rural area of Sauquoit, New York, in August 1993. When she did not return home, her family went out looking. Later in the day, her bike was discovered by a neighbor hidden in a bush off the side of the road about half a mile down from the Wood family's home.

Five months after Sara's disappearance, a man attempted to abduct 12-year-old Becky Savarese when she was walking to school through downtown Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Becky managed to escape and report the incident wherein a 43-year-old suspect named Lewis Lent was called in and questioned by police.

Lewis Lent told the police he used to work as a part-time janitor at the Pittsfield Plaza Cinema Center. That was the last place 12-year-old Jimmy Bernardo was seen in 1990 before he was found murdered. Authorities suspected that Lent may have had something to do with it and he was later arrested on charges relating to Becky Savarese's case.

After hours of questioning, Lewis Lent finally admitted to the murders of Sara Wood and Jimmy Bernardo. He told the police the chilling details about his "master plan": Lent was building a large wooden partition in his bedroom to lock his victims in after abducting them.

Lewis Lent was sentenced to 25 years to life for the kidnapping and murder of Sara Anne Wood and he was sent back to Massachusetts to serve the rest of his life in prison. The court also sentenced him to life in prison without parole for the abduction and murder of Jim Bernardo along with a sentence of 17 to 20 years for the attempted kidnap of Becky Savarese.

He remains in custody in Massachusetts and investigators with the New York State Police are still in contact with him hoping he will provide the details of where he buried Sara Anne Wood.

“It’s 30 years later … I can’t imagine many things that are as terribly life-changing. Finding the body is important because then my mother could know where she is...”

Dusty Wood, who is Sara's older brother, now dedicates his time to spreading awareness about child abductions.
