HBO's I Am Not a Monster: The Lois Riess Murders is all set to cover the brutal double murder of David Riess and Pamela Hutchinson at the hands of Lois Riess, who was the wife of the former victim. The two-part docuseries by the acclaimed director Erin Lee Carr is all set to cover the murders alongside a portrayal of Lois Riess' side of the story.
Riess allegedly killed her former husband in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, before fleeing to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, where she killed Pamela Hutchinson to steal her identity. It was nearly a year before she was caught by the authorities.
The two-part docuseries is set to premiere on October 15, 2024, at 9.00 PM EST on HBO and Max, where it will be available for streaming as well. The synopsis for the episode reads:
"In 2018, a small-town murder in Minnesota shocks a community when Lois Riess kills her husband David and goes on the run from the authorities; years later, Lois sits down with the filmmakers telling her story for the first time."
After being caught, Lois was charged with the first-degree murder of Pamela Hutchinson. She took a plea deal and was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Later, she was also charged with David Riess' murder in Minnesota and was sentenced to life in prison once again. She remains incarcerated at the mixed-security Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee, Scott County.
What did Lois Riess do?
Lois Riess lived with her husband in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. Though the exact details surrounding the murder remain a mystery, on March 23, 2018, David Riess was discovered dead at their Blooming Pirate home. Soon after, Lois went to Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
There she allegedly met and befriended Pamela Hutchinson, a Bradenton native who had arrived there on April 3, 2018, to help a friend scatter her husband’s ashes on Sanibel. The two were allegedly seen multiple times in the resort and surrounding hotels, which led investigators to assume that she even stayed with Hutchinson at the hotel.
On April 9, 2018, the police found Hutchinson's body in her hotel room. Lois Riess supposedly killed her to steal her identity and live her life. They were said to be similar looking, which made Hutchinson the target of this brutal crime. When the investigators connected the two crimes, they started a nationwide manhunt for her.
When she withdrew money from her dead husband's account, she was ultimately caught at South Padre Island, Texas, on April 19, 2018. She was charged with multiple counts of theft and murder.
She took a plea deal and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Minnesota’s Dodge County Sheriff’s Office announced around the same time that she was to be brought back to her home state for the earlier murder.
In 2020, she also pleaded guilty to first-degree murder of David Riess. She was sentenced to another life in prison without the possibility of parole. As a part of an extradition agreement between Florida and Minnesota, she was sent to the mixed-security Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee, Scott County, where she still remains.
I Am Not a Monster: The Lois Riess Murders will cover this case in more detail when it premieres on HBO and Max. Stay tuned for more updates.
