As shown in I Am a Killer, on March 16, 2013, Makueeyapee Whitford and his friend Adrian were on their way to Polson. Adrian wanted to meet his family in Polson, and Whitford agreed to take him there. The two friends rented a hotel, bought a pack of 30 Budweisers, and were having a merry time sightseeing and partying.

That night, they went to a house party. After entering the party, Makueeyapee tried to crack a joke, to break the ice among strangers, which did not go well.

In I Am a Killer, Whitford narrates this incident:

"When I went in, I tried to make a joke to try to fu*king break the ice. I said 'Hey man where all the Blackfeet at’."

Whitford felt threatened since the group inside the room belonged to the Salish and Kootenai tribes, whereas he was a Blackfoot. The Salish-Kootenai and the Blackfeet appeared to have a historical rivalry that Whitford was unaware of.

In the show, Whitford narrates this rivalry as:

"These guys had some kind of issue with Blackfeet. Salish, and Kootenai rivalry that dates back to the 1800’s. But uh I didn’t know any of that...I’m like I’m in a house standing next to a group of people that I don’t know, and you’re talking about jumping me? I didn’t even say nothing that I would consider any kind of derogatory statement."

Later that night, a 26-year-old called John Pierre Jr. and others surrounded Whitford and became aggressive towards him. A frightened Whitford then took his knife and stabbed John Pierre in the heat of the moment. Following the stabbing, Makueeyapee Whitford and his friend fled the scene in his car.

John Pierre Jr. died because of the damage to his aorta and pulmonary artery caused by the stabbing. He died a few minutes after the incident.

Whitford was sentenced to 60 years behind bars

A few hours after the killing, the police tracked Whitford’s car and arrested him in a nearby motel. He was tried in December 2014 for this homicide. In the trial, Makueeyapee Whitford called this incident an act of self-defense and referred to himself as a victim of a hate crime.

In I Am a Killer, Whitford said:

"It was self-defence from a hate crime. I stabbed this guy one single time. That was it. I knew that those guys had knives. I felt that they were gonna come jump. Why were these guys targeting me? Because I was Blackfeet. That’s what it comes down to.”

His statements were however not enough to convince the jury of his innocence. He was ultimately sentenced to 60 years behind bars, with a chance of parole after 25 years.
