Matthew Ecker was found guilty of the murder of Alexandra Pennig.
As per reports by CBS News, Alexandra Pennig was found dead on December 16, 2022, inside the bathroom of her own home in Minnesota. When the homicide detectives reached the crime scene, they found her shot in the head, deceased and lifeless.
According to Alex's boyfriend Matthew Ecker, who was the only person there in the house at the time of her death, she shot herself in the washroom using his firearm. He then broke open the door, discovered her deceased, laid the gun on her chest, washed his hands, and contacted 911. When the detectives arrived, they discovered that the sink where Ecker claimed to have washed his hands was dry, which struck a chord.
As per CBS News, the detectives found prescription drugs, antidepressants, and some alcohol in the house. Upon further investigation, it was found that the victim had a history of depression and drug abuse; however, she was sent to rehab, and she came out clean. Her parents also claimed that suicide was impossible as their daughter was doing perfectly fine.
When the detectives interrogated Matthew Ecker and inquired if he had any conflicts with the victim the night before her death, he denied having such an event. He stated they had gone out, partied, and then returned home.
Reportedly, in between the interrogations and investigations, forensics found a piece of round metal underneath the victim's dead body. It was a piece from the broken door lock.
This made the detectives theorize that Matthew Ecker did not break the door after the shooting. He broke the door himself and shot the victim, following which she landed lifeless on the broken lock part of the door. As per the theory, the now-deceased nurse was trying to hide in the washroom to save herself from Matthew Ecker.
Matthew Ecker was sentenced to 30 years in jail.
Matthew Ecker did not plead guilty to the crime and has held his innocence to date. However, after an 8-day trial in 2024, the Ramesy Country jury convicted him of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison and is currently incarcerated at the Minnesota Correctional Facility. As per CBS News, Eric is trying to appeal his conviction now.
