Season 1 episode 3 of Worst Ex Ever on Netflix titled Killing for Custody features the heinous crimes committed by Mei Li and Rosa Hill, a mother-daughter duo. The official synopsis of the episode reads:
"From chilling betrayals to murder plots, this true-crime docuseries dissects the dark side of love through eyewitness testimonies."
Mei Li and Rosa Hill were charged with first-degree murder after being found guilty of Selma Hill's strangulation and Eric Hill's attempted murder. They were each sentenced to 25 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole on July 28, 2011.
Mei Li and Rosa Hill are presently serving life sentences at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, according to prison records.

Mei Li and Rosa Hill tried to kill Eric Hill and slayed Selma Hill
As shown in episode 3 of Worst Ex Ever on Netflix, Selma Hill was found murdered outside her residence on January 7, 2009. She was strangled to death and then dumped upside down inside a dustbin by Mei Li and Rosa Hill.
Her autopsy revealed that she had several cuts and wounds on her body and there were signs of struggle, which indicated that she fought back.
After Eric got custody of his 2-year-old daughter in 2011, his grandmom Sally would often look after her. However, on January 7, 2009, when Sally’s boyfriend Lester didn’t get a response after he called her multiple times, he was worried. He sent his son and daughter-in-law to Sally’s home to get an update on her.
Eric along with his two-year-old daughter entered the home via the garage door at around 5:45 on January 7, 2009. Eric did not find Sally in the house, making him wonder where she had gone. It is important to note that Sally was 91 years old and needed assistance to get out of the house.
After Eric checked upstairs and was about to go down, he saw Mei (Eric’s wife Rosa’s daughter) in the house. Mei told Eric that his grandmom was in the garage. Eric left his daughter with Mei and as he was going downstairs to search for Sally, his wife Rosa jumped out of the baby’s room and tased him. As Eric fell, Mei hit him with a baton.
Hearing the taser, Lester’s son and daughter-in-law called 911. Rosa kept kicking Eric, and Mei also hit him continuously. When Mei dropped the baton for some time, Eric picked it up and tried swinging it on her to save himself. However, Mei got a hold of it and this time she placed the baton over Eric’s throat and attempted to choke him.
Rosa then came down with a gun and pointed it at Eric’s chest, ordering him to stop fighting. Mei asked him to give up the custody of his daughter and Eric, who did not want to die, agreed in the moment. Officer Jared Hathaway meanwhile entered the home through the garage and heard a male voice screaming and asking the assassins not to kill him.
As the officers approached the scene, they saw Eric bruised, bleeding, and beaten up. They also found Mei covered in blood. This made it difficult to distinguish between the suspect and the victim. Eric was in a state of panic and did not listen to the officer's instructions, after which he was tased and handcuffed. Rosa too was found inside the house in the bedroom.
Eric, along with Mei Li and Rosa Hill, were all taken into custody, after which the body of Sally was found. Eric's daughter was also rescued from the upstairs washroom, where she was locked and was screaming for help for a long time while Eric was attacked.
Both women (Mei Li and Rosa Hill) were very calm initially; however, they were arrested based on circumstantial evidence later. As the investigations unfolded, it was revealed that the homicide was a premeditated one, and the mother-daughter duo had been planning on it for a long time.
Evidence was also recovered from the crime scene, in the car of the accused, and at Mei Li and Rosa Hill's Brentwood home, which linked them directly to the crime. On July 28, 2011, Sally got justice as both Mei Li and Rosa Hill were sentenced to 25 years to life for killing Sally and also for trying to murder Eric.
'Operation custody' was a failure
As per the plan, the two intended to murder Eric's whole family. They wanted to do this so they could get custody of Rosa and Eric’s 2-year-old daughter. They planned on killing Selma Hill and making Eric confess that he killed her because she had confronted him about the se*ual abuse charges against him, which were proved wrong in court.
Mei Li and Rosa Hill planned on framing Eric, who they believed would then be forced to end his life, after which Rosa would get custody of her daughter. However, things did not go as planned and they both had to pay for their crimes.
