Michael Mageau is one of the few people to have survived the Zodiac killer's murder spree. In 1969, the Zodiac Killer attacked Michael, who was 19 then, but he survived due to his timely hospitalization.
The new Netflix docuseries This is the Zodiac Speaking reveals more information about the infamous serial killer from the 1960s. It also features the Seawater family who were close to the man alleged to be the Zodiac killer- Arthur Leigh Allen. The Seawaters add their insights to this documentary, in the hope that the zodiac mystery will finally be solved.

The Zodiac killer shot Michael Mageau and Darlene several times
As revealed in This is the Zodiac Speaking, on July 4, 1969, Darlene, a 22-year-old waitress was meeting a friend named Michael Mageau. They parked their automobile in an empty lot of Blue Rock Springs Park. Soon, a car pulled up behind them.
Someone from the automobile emerged brandishing a high-powered flashlight and shone a light on the car. Darlene and Michael assumed the person to be a cop and rolled down the window. But the person who emerged from the automobile began openly firing at them.
The killer shot Michael in the right arm and Derrin in the neck, causing her to fall unconscious. Mageau was also hurt in the knee and mouth and hopped into the rear seat. The murderer found him trying to escape and shot both Michael and Darlene a few more times before fleeing the scene.
Here is how Darlene’s sister describes the shooting in This is the Zodiac Speaking, on Netflix:
"He (Darlene's father) just told me that she was with Michael. He was just a friend from Vallejo. He told me they were parked at a golf course. Just thought it was a cop pulled up behind her. She rolled the window down. My dad said that he had a flashlight shining into their eyes."
She continued:
"They were blinded. And he just started shooting. Mike flipped into the back seat cause he was shot in the knee and in the mouth. But I guess he was laying there, and I guess he crawled out of the car. And the killer shot some more. Mostly in her."
Michael Mageau recognized the Zodiac Killer
After this tragic encounter, Michael Mageau was taken to the hospice. He survived with proper treatment, however, his friend Darlene died on her way to the hospital, as she succumbed to severe bullet wounds.
The attacker had shot Mike four times. After his recovery, he described the attacker as 5'8 in height. Later, when Michael was shown a photo lineup of the probable Zodiac killer suspects, he pointed his finger at Arthur Leigh Allen's portrait. Another witness, however, testified that Arthur Leigh Allen could not have been the murderer because he weighed more than 100 pounds while the murderer weighed less.
Although the police suspected Arthur Leigh Allen of being one of the most wanted serial killers of the 60s, there was never enough evidence against him for the killings. To date, this mystery remains unsolved and the Zodiac killer is yet to be caught.
