Dateline NBC's upcoming episode is all set to cover the murder of Akia Eggleston, for which, her boyfriend and father of her child, Michael Robertson, was implicated. The soon-to-be father was allegedly having an affair with another 22-year-old girl, with whom he also shared two children. While Akia's body was never found, Robertson was prosecuted based on circumstantial evidence.
This case is the subject of the Dateline NBC episode, titled The Day Akia Disappeared, which is set to air on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 10 PM EST. The synopsis of the episode reads:
"A pregnant woman vanishes before her baby shower and detectives struggle to unravel the chilling mystery: is it a missing persons case, or something far more sinister?"
Despite not finding any physical evidence linking Michael Robertson to the crime, his suspicious behavior, some narrative inconsistencies in his stories, and his search history implicated him in the crime. He was arrested and charged for the murder of Akia Eggleston's murder, and the jury found him guilty.
He was sentenced to two life terms for the murders of Akia Eggleston and her unborn child, Anubis. He remains in prison as of today, where he may continue to stay for the remainder of his life.
What did Michael Robertson do?
Michael Robertson was friends with Akia from a young age as he was the grandson of Akia's regular babysitter. As children, they spent time together but drifted apart as they grew up. Akia started being distant from everyone and everything after her mother's death in 2012 and it was not until 2016 that Akia and Michael reconnected.
This time, however, their friendship blossomed into romance, and by 2017, Akia was pregnant with Michael's child. However, on May 7, 2017, at the couple's child's gender reveal party, the eight-month pregnant Akia did not turn up. Her absence rang alarm bells amongst all her friends and family members.
After searching for her, they involved the police. As the investigators went ahead with the interrogations, they discovered that Michael Robertson was seemingly hiding something. Soon, they found out that he was having an affair with his previous partner, with whom he also shared two children.
It also became clear that things between Robertson and Akia Eggleston weren't quite great as the latter was planning to move in with Robertson and raise their baby together, while the former was still not committing his future to Akia.
Akia was also last seen by Michael Robertson. Authorities discovered that she was last seen alive when she went to take out money on May 3, 2024, allegedly for a house deposit. But she was never seen again.
Why was Michael Robertson arrested?
As Akia's body was not found, the case almost went cold, but the doubts on Robertson persisted. In 2022, police officially reclassified her case from a missing person to a homicide. They also looked at Robertson's search history, which heavily implied that he had killed her.
His search history included terms like garbage collection and dumping routes. One of the queries also asked where garbage goes after being collected. This, combined with the motive that Michael had, led to his prosecution.
Though the body was not found, it did not take the jury long to declare him guilty. He was handed two life sentences for the murders of Akia and her unborn child, Anubis.
Now 44, Michael Robertson remains incarcerated at the Western Correctional Institution in Maryland, where he will perhaps stay till the end of his life.
Dateline NBC will cover this case in further detail. Stay tuned.
