Missing You is a five-part limited series that premiered on Netflix globally on January 1, 2025. Adapted from Harlan Coben's 2014 novel of the same name, the series features the author as an executive producer. Directed by Nimer Rashed and Isher Sahota, it is brought to life by the Manchester-based Quay Street Productions.
While the original novel unfolds in New York City, the Netflix adaptation relocates the drama to the UK, following in the footsteps of some of Coben's earlier successes on the platform. Filming began in early 2024, with key scenes shot in locations such as Bolton’s town centre, Le Mans Crescent, Victoria Square, and Bolton School.
The plot of Missing You centres on Detective Kat Donovan (played by Rosalind Eleazar), who embarks on a relentless quest to uncover the truth behind her father’s murder and her fiancé Josh’s disappearance 11 years ago. As she digs deeper, she uncovers a tangled web of secrets and danger.
The official logline for Missing You on IMDb reads:
"Detective Kat Donovan's world unravels when she finds her estranged fiancé on a dating app. Leading her to reopen her father's unsolved murder."
The series boasts a stellar cast, including Richard Armitage, Ashley Walters, James Nesbitt, and Lenny Henry, and has been well-received by audiences, earning a 6.3/10 rating on IMDb.
Missing You: Shooting locations explored
1) Manchester city centre and surrounding areas
Most of Missing You was filmed in Manchester City Centre and the surrounding areas. The city's well-known landmarks and urban settings provided the backdrop for this Netflix drama.
Produced by Manchester-based Quay Street Productions, the production team found the combination of history and modernity when choosing Manchester as the location that would complement the tone of this show.
With its industrial heritage and lively cultural scene, Manchester in northwest England provides the backdrop for filmmakers to shoot diverse scenes.
2) Countryside locations
It's in the rural settings of Missing You that an eerie, engaging atmosphere is achieved. Some of the most pivotal moments in the series take place in those very settings, at Titus's farmhouse, played by Steve Pemberton.
Filmed across the landscapes of Glossop and surrounding farms, these sequences dial up the tension and mystery of the story. Located close to the Peak District in Derbyshire, this is a place of rolling hills, historic farms, and isolation.
In a radiotimes.com report published on January 1, 2025, lead writer and executive producer Victoria Asare-archer talked about the importance of the visual contrast between the urban and rural settings in Missing You.
She also mentioned how important the rural locations were for the grim sequences.
"The cliché is: urban – bad, country – good, but we wanted to subvert that by exploring the darkness of the countryside in Titus’ world. That is not a pretty farm. It is a dark, messy, muddy place where horrible things happen. It rained horrifically on the day of filming one of the biggest farm scenes and it felt perfect. Very British." - Victoria Asare-Archer in radiotimes.com
3) Stockport
Stockport, an old town in Greater Manchester, is one of the locations that helped define the visual identity of Missing You. Among the recognizable places is the building used as the police station where Detective Kat Donovan, played by Rosalind Eleazar, and Stagger, played by Richard Armitage, work.
This Victorian building added depth and authenticity to the scenes, transforming into a key setting in the show's narrative. Richard Armitage lauded the site for its unique charm, far from being the mundane Police Station sets.
"Often, they are just mundane sets of banks of computers, strip lighting and low ceilings. Our production designer, Vanessa Hawkins, used this old Victorian building, which I think was once an orphanage."
Armitage added:
" It has a balustrade balcony and real height so we have crane shots. You can see the whole of the police station from above and the layering of design within the room. It’s brilliant," Richard Armitage about the Police station set reported in radiotimes.com
Just seven miles southeast of Manchester, Stockport has a long history and preserved Victorian architecture. Its versatility made it the appropriate location for filming Missing You.
Other locations of the filming of Missing You
Some of the pivotal scenes in Missing You were filmed in various locations around the UK. In the final episodes, Kat is given information on Josh's (Ashley Walters) possible whereabouts, and she finds herself travelling to a small town.
This was filmed in the small village of Parkgate, which is located on the Wirral Peninsula in Cheshire, about 40 miles outside Manchester city centre.
Some of Bolton's recognizable places, such as Le Mans Crescent, Victoria Square, and Bolton School, have been prominently featured. These city landmarks gave the series an air of reality.
The farmhouse in Glossop became the setting for Titus' shadowy and sinister world. According to Pemberton, the farmhouse itself and the land around it were scary, especially during night shoots.
"Obviously, Titus needs to be doing his shenanigans in a very remote place. We used two farms, one for the interiors and one for the exteriors. Farms can be quite scary places. I had always been haunted by Apaches"-Steve Pemberton on the farmhouse around Glossop reported in radiotimes.com published on January 1, 2025.
