Netflix’s coming-of-age drama Penelope premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The series revolves around the titular character, played by Megan Stott, a 16-year-old teenager who grows disillusioned with her city life and decides to embark on a journey of self-discovery.
She decides to become a solo traveler, intent on leaving her past life and getting closer to nature. Season one has seen the release of eight episodes, all now available on Netflix. The official synopsis reads:
“A 16-year-old who feels alienated from contemporary civilization is pulled into the uncharted wilderness and starts to build a new life for herself there.”
A transformative tale that takes viewers across various scenic locations, Penelope delves into the attraction of a simpler life. The protagonist, in a bid to get closer to nature, embarks on a journey during which she makes new friends and learns a new way of life.
Considering the setting and the concept, a range of unique, breathtaking locations across the United States were used for filming. Ranging from Skykomish to Index, picturesque towns and cities have featured in the series, predominantly in the US state of Washington.
Filming locations of Penelope explored
Snoqualmie, Washington
Penelope opens with a disillusioned protagonist who is tired of city life. This was depicted via Snoqualmie, Washington. The small town gives viewers a glimpse of the city life the protagonist wishes to escape.
The Black Dog cafe, which she visits in the first episode, is also located in the same city. At the cafe, in particular, Penelope meets Sam, a musician played by Austin Abrams, whom she decides to travel with. She also picks up a travel and survival guide at the cafe, representing her first steps towards her new life.
Ashford, Washington
Moving on, the protagonist is seen visiting the Cascade National Park, which is fictitious. However, various locations, including Mount Rainier National Park, were used to depict the national park.
Further, Olallie State Park, also situated in Washington, was used, especially for its dense forests that are heavily featured throughout the season. The same State Park was the filming location for the iconic Twin Peaks scene from the series.
Index, Washington
Moving on, the city-like scenes featured later in the series were mostly shot in Index, Washington. Penelope picks up an injury during her travels, for which she is hospitalized. However, upon being discharged, she walks aimlessly through a small town full of people.
These scenes were shot mainly in Index. The protagonist is seen attempting to revisit city life after a transformative journey, and a local Index hospital is also featured in the series.
Skykomish, Washington
Finally, Penelope also features multiple scenes shot in Skykomish, situated in Washington. A range of scenes depicting small-town life were shot here.
Further, an episode eight scene in which the protagonist visits the Cascade Library, where she discovers further information about her parents, was shot in Skykomish. Towards the end of season one, a range of picturesque scenes were also shot in Skykomish.
