Filming locations of The Decameron in Italy

Stage 5, Cinecitta Studios, Rome, Italy

The Decameron was mainly shot at the Cinecitta studios and occupied the main and famous stage 5 of the studios for shooting the main interior scenes of the show. Stage 5 of the studios was centered on building the interior of the Villa Santa.

Luca Tranchino, Erica Facchini, and their team built the set with the historical accuracy of the set kept in mind. Things were made from scratch for the villa, including the rooms' beds, paints on the wall, and paintings on the walls.

Stage 5 of the Cinecitta studios was known as the second home for the famous Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini. Cinecitta Studios is considered the first pick of filmmakers who aim to get the essence of Rome into their films. Recent shows like Those About to Die were also shot at the Cinecitta Studios.

Stage 4 and 11, Cinecitta Studios, Rome, Italy

The Decameron was also shot at stage 4 and stage 11 of the studio. These stages were used to build the elaborate set of the interior of the Villa Santa. The locations which were inside the villa but were not the main part of it were built separately in the two studios.

Cinecitta Studios were built in 1937 and are known to be the hub for Italian Cinema. The studio has also hosted several large American film productions like Roman Holiday (1953) and the famous Italian filmmakers’ film La Dolce Vita (1960).

Florence, City of Tuscany, Italy

In addition to the studio shooting, the makers also included scenes from real locations in Florence. To set the context of the series, some scenes show the city's historical architecture. These scenes not only set the context of the series but also add appealing visuals to the show for the audience.

Florence is the capital and the most populated city of the Tuscany region in Italy. In the medieval era, Florence was the center of European trade and finance and, hence, was considered one of the wealthiest cities.

Rome, Capital of Lazio, Italy

Since The Decameron season 1 is set in medieval Rome and the makers have emphasized the accurate depiction of that era, the real location shootings in the show add more resonating visuals for the audience.

Such visuals that depict the current locations of Rome with a touch of historical architecture add a visual depth to the series.
