The upcoming episode of People Magazine Investigates on Investigation Discovery is all set to cover the attempted murder of Baron Li, which was orchestrated by Shaerin Kelley, his ex-wife, whom he doubted from the very instant he was attacked. Joseph Good became the one who pulled the trigger after Kelley hired the young man with a lucrative offer. His friend, Quincy Mendez, was also involved as the getaway driver after the crime.

This remains a story that is both harrowing and miraculous as Baron Li managed to survive the nine gunshot wounds fired at him. His survival also meant that his perpetrators got punished, with all three people involved currently serving time, with Shaerin Kelley singled out as the primary perpetrator.

People Magazine Investigates season 8 episode 8, which premieres on December 9, 2024, at 9 pm EST, covers this case in further detail. The synopsis for the episode reads:

Ahead of the episode, let us go over the grizzly crime and the resulting investigation which landed the three perpetrators in prison.

Who are Shaerin Kelley and Joseph Good and what did they do?

Shaerin Kelley, Baron Li's wife, and the couple had gone through a bitter custody battle for their differently-abled son, which the latter had ultimately won. When their son was misdiagnosed as a child, they filed and won a lawsuit for medical malpractice.

Since this was a significant amount, authorities later alleged that this fund could be one of the primary motives behind Shaerin Kelley's attempts at taking Li's life.

While she did not do it herself, she hired 17-year-old, Joseph Good to carry out the murder. She allegedly offered him $13,000 for the shooting. Good got his friend, Quincy Mendez, involved as a getaway driver after the shooting, allegedly offering him $5,000 to do it.

On the morning of July 10, 2020, when Baron was leaving his apartment in Bellevue, Washington, Good fired multiple shots at him and fled. Baron Li sustained nine gunshot wounds but still managed to survive. He also managed to point the police in his ex-wife's direction.

Where are Shaerin Kelley and Joseph Good now?

As authorities began the investigation, they caught a glimpse of the vehicle that was possibly harboring the killer. On tracking the truck, they reached Quincy Mendez. It was not long before Mendez admitted to being the driver of the truck he had borrowed from his father. He also revealed that Joseph Good was the one who fired the shots.

Further, phone records connected Good to Shaerin Kelley, who had allegedly offered the young man a large sum of money to get rid of her ex-husband. When Li survived, she even allegedly suggested making another attempt.

On October 8, 2020, all three perpetrators were arrested and charged. Within the next couple of years, all three of them pleaded guilty to the crime and received varying sentences.

Shaerin Kelley was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the attempted murder. She remains incarcerated at the Washington Corrections Center for Women. Good was sentenced to 152.25 months but his conviction details were never made public.
