Shaunna Dodd staged an entire homicide
On December 29, 2012, Shaunna Dodd called 911 and informed them that a man put a gun to her head and tried to rob her in her residence. However, she had reached safety but her husband Brad couldn’t. When the deputies arrived, Shaunna told them that the men who had attacked her and her husband were armed. When asked about if her husband was harmed she said that she did not know.
As per reports, she had left the house with Brad’s cousin Alison, who used to stay with them. The question of the hour was if Brad was dead or taken hostage. The sheriffs on the scene assumed him to be alive and approached the house in a way similar to how they would approach a hostage situation. However, there was no response from inside the house, therefore the squad broke in with the rescue team.
Upon entering the house, they found out that the scene was in a mess. Brad Dodd was found dead on his bed. He was in a pool of blood. Brad was shot twice, once at the back of his neck and the other to the right rear of the skull. There was no shred of evidence, no footprints, and no murder weapon either.
The detectives assumed that he was killed in his sleep. When they interviewed the neighbors of the Dodds, they got to know that Brad was a hardworking guy and although he had two young children, he still had taken his 16-year-old cousin Alison in to give her a great life.
What did Shaunna Dodd say had happened?
As per police reports, according to Shaunna while the children were away at her parent's house, armed intruders with handguns came into the house. One of the intruders held her at gunpoint. Shaunna said -
"He (the intruder) asked me where the sh*t is (the safe)"
Brad used to store the pot in the safe for his medical needs and also had a prescription. As per Shaunna's statements, she opened the safe for the intruders, who took everything that was inside.
However, by that time, Brad, who was sleeping, got up and asked what was happening. Next up, Shaunna heard two gunshots from Brad’s room and saw him in a pool of blood. She took Alison and drove to her aunt’s house and called 911 to report that 2 intruders attacked her home.
Shaunna Dodd was trying to cover her tracks
As per reports, the detectives learned that Shaunna was a bartender and there were disputes in the bar very often. Recently, there was a dispute between her husband and a man named Byron in the bar.
The detectives also learned that Shaunna Dodd was married at a very young age and had kids by 23. However, when her children grew up, she found a job in the bar and would stay out late, keeping the bar open after hours and partying. Alison, who was adopted by them became a caretaker for their children which Brad did not like.
Shaunna’s behavior triggered Brad and he even learned of her having an affair. Brad was known to have issues with Shaunna's public behaviour and once he even went to the bar and warned her to come back home in 10 minutes, which led to a big fight.
After hearing Shaunna's story, the detectives found it bizarre that the two kids were away on the same day when the father was killed and also that the killers only shot Brad. However, Shaunna’s boss LaVeta Dudley came to save the day with answers. She told the authorities that post-killing, Shaunna Dodd called Dudley and asked her to dispose of a bag that she had left in her driveway.
As per reports, the bag that Dudley had received from Shaunna, was the main piece of evidence. There were gloves, a gun, missing weed from the house, and missing items from the safe, all in that bag. Upon DNA analysis, Shaunna Dodd’s DNA was found present in the gloves and the gun found was the same one used to kill Brad.
A few unknown witnesses also testified that Shaunna wanted to get rid of Brad for a long time and as per reports, she had also wanted to hire killers to do her dirty work.
The cousin Alison also talked about Shaunna’s plans to kill Brad and how she once tried to poison him by contaminating his favorite Jack and Coke. She also revealed their failing marriage, the constant disagreements, Shaunna’s affairs at the bar and her wanting a divorce.
When her boss asked why she killed Brad, she reportedly replied:
"I snapped"
Shaunna Dodd was sentenced to life in October 2013 and charged with first-degree murder without chances of parole.
