Sydney Powell's case remains one of the most brutal ones in the history of Akron, Ohio, and the rest of the world, because it gives a sharp reminder that one cannot even be safe in their homes with their loved ones. Sydney Powell, who was only 19 years old, ended up stabbing her own mother nearly 30 times after beating her with an iron skillet. The motive behind this was simply for her mother to not find out that she was suspended from college.
The case will be the subject of this week's Snapped on Oxygen. It will air on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at 6.00 PM EST. The synopsis for the same reads:
"A healthcare worker is attacked in her home; police must follow clues to discover the truth."
After the murder, Sydney Powell was immediately arrested and charged with the murder of her mother, something even school authorities, who happened to be on the phone call with Brenda, heard. Despite pleas of insanity and her father's appeal to let their daughter go, Sydney was sentenced to life in prison with a possibility of parole only after 15 years.
Since then, there have been appeals from the defense to overturn the judgment, but as of today, Sydney remains behind bars.
Who was Sydney Powell and why did she murder her mother?
Sydney Powell was a 19-year-old student from Akron, Ohio, during the time of this infamous murder. According to reports, Sydney was suspended from the University of Mount Union for poor grades. In fact, the school had called Brenda Powell at home to reveal this information.
But during the phone call, Sydney panicked and hit her mother with an iron skillet. With the school authorities still on the call, the teenager flew into a murderous rage and allegedly stabbed her mother nearly 30 times.
Michell Gaffney, the Associate Dean of the college, described this from hearing on the call, as reported by NBC News. She said:
"The phone cut off at some point after, I would say, somewhere in the neighborhood of six or seven of those thudding, those sort of thud sounds, and the screaming had continued."
The school authorities, who were on call and heard a commotion, were concerned and continued to call the Powell residence in hopes of an answer. They did get an answer, but that twisted the matter even further.
After brutally murdering her mother, Sydney Powell picked up the call and answered as Brenda Powell. However, this alerted the school authorities that something was definitely wrong. Gaffney added:
"The voice on the other ends said, 'Yes, this is Brenda. Yes, this is Brenda'...It was not Brenda. I was sure it was Sydney. Both Dean [of Students John] Frazier and I looked at each other and sort of shook our heads at each other and said that's not Brenda. He then said, 'Sydney, I think this is you, this is not Brenda.' The phone went dead."
Sydney was eventually taken in by the police and was eventually sentenced to life in prison in her 2023 hearing. She was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 15 years of sentence.
After her sentencing, Sydney's defense has appealed for insanity, but so far, no change has been made to the decision. Sydney Powell continues to remain behind bars as of now.
The upcoming episode of Snapped on Oxygen will cover this case in more detail.
