Teresa Broudreaux's brutal murder became one of the darkest cases in the history of California, with the death also running the life of Ronnie Fematt, Teresa's newly married husband, who was blamed for the death despite no evidence against him. This murder is the subject of Netflix's latest true-crime series, Homicide: Los Angeles, which covers some of the most infamous cases from the city.
The case dates back to 1980 when five-month-pregnant Teresa Broudreaux was brutally beaten to death at Malaga Cove Beach in Palos Verdes Estates outside of Los Angeles, California, after she left the house in the heat of an argument with her husband, Ronnie Fematt.
What followed was a long-drawn investigation that would resolve only after decades. This investigation also took away a lot from Ronnie Fematt, who not only lost his new wife and unborn daughter but also suffered from getting blamed for the murder for years despite the authorities clearing him.
It was only in 2013 that the authorities finally had a breakthrough and found a DNA match in Robert Yniguez, who was a serial s*x offender. He was ultimately arrested in 2017 and sentenced in 2019, clearing Ronnie's name for good. But this process took 40 years. Ronnie has since tried to move on and create a life for himself.
Who is Ronnie Fematt and why was he blamed for Teresa Broudreaux's murder?
Ronnie Fematt hailed from a Hispanic area, which boasted a culture of gangs, lowriding, and drug abuse. By the time he turned 20, Ronnie was also a habitual drug user and was seemingly only going on a downward spiral.
However, things changed for him when he met the beautiful Teresa Broudreaux, a strong and independent mother with whom he instantly fell in love. With Teresa and a future in mind, Ronnie began mending his ways, and after dating for two and a half years, they decided to get married.
Teresa also got pregnant with Ronnie's child, and things seemed to be only moving for the better for the couple. However, on March 3, 1980, it all changed.
Teresa and Ronnie got into a bitter argument on the night of March 3, and Ronnie decided to go to a house party hosted by his friends to cool off. As for Teresa, she went to her sister's house, but no one saw her alive after she got out of there.
In the early hours of March 4, a surfer reportedly found Teresa's dead body, naked and beaten to death, at Malaga Cove Beach in Palos Verdes Estates. The official cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma.
With no leads or motive for anyone else, the suspicion fell on Ronnie Fematt, whose argument with his wife seemed to be the only logical thing for the authorities.
While Ronnie Fematt had many people corroborating his alibi and also helped vigorously in the investigation, the community could not think of anyone else committing the crime. In fact, even after authorities cleared Ronnie, everyone from the local community to the victim's family doubted his innocence.
When the case eventually grew cold, Ronnie started feeling like an outcast in his city. This long-drawn set of accusations drove Ronnie to substance abuse once again.
Where is Ronnie Fematt now?
Thankfully, after many years of the murder, Ronnie decided to move past the accusations and build a life for himself. By the 2010s, Ronnie had been sober and tried to live an honest life.
It helped when the authorities finally cracked the case, and the accused was punished, clearing Ronnie's name once and for all. Ronnie also reconnected with Linda, Teresa's daughter from a previous relationship, who Ronnie also loved and cherished.
He even appeared on Homicide: Los Angeles and gave his testimony about the events.
Homicide: Los Angeles is now streaming on Netflix.
