The first season is set in the frozen Arctic. Here the crew of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror try to navigate the Northwest Passage in 1845. Although it's set in the Arctic, most of the season was filmed in Croatia and Hungary.

The barren, icy landscape of Pag, Croatia, was used to mimic the Arctic environment. Pag's rocky terrain and windswept vistas provided the perfect backdrop for the treacherous journey depicted in the show.

Additionally, many indoor scenes were shot in Budapest, Hungary. The production team built detailed sets to replicate the interior of the ships. They were completed with period accurate details and weathered textures that added to the authenticity of the series.

The second season shifts to a different time and place. It focuses on a Japanese Amercian community during World war II.

Much of the filming for this season took place in British Columbia, Canada, mostly the Vancouver area. Steveston, a small fishing village near Vancouver, served as one of the primary filming locations.

The production transformed parts of the village to depict the internment camps where Japanese-Americans were held during the war. The use of Steveston and other locations around Vancouver allowed the production to capture both the historical context and supernatural elements.

The diverse landscapes of British Columbia provided a fitting backdrop for the eerie and unsettling atmosphere. The choice of locations helped convey the isolation and fear. It was experienced by the characters and enhanced the overall impact of the series.
