What happened with Walter Triplett Jr.?
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Walter Triplett Jr. was one among four siblings but his bond was strongest with his twin sister, Waltonya Triplett. Growing up in a tumultuous household, Walter found himself drawn to illegal activities in his teen years. He got involved in drug dealing and had several run-ins with the law. One time, in 2007, he had to spend three years in prison on charges of assault.
However, Walter decided to turn his life around in January 2009, when he became a father. Just when he thought he found stability in his life, it was turned upside down.
On April 30, 2009, Walter Triplett Jr. found himself in a street fight outside The Barley House in Cleveland, Ohio. During the altercation, he saw two men approaching Waltonya, his twin sister, and out of anger and protectiveness for his sister, he punched one of them.
The man he punched, Michael Corrado, collapsed on the spot and had to be taken to the hospital immediately. However, it was too late and he tragically passed away. Due to Walter’s direct involvement in his death, he was arrested and his trial began on September 9, 2009.
A case against him was made heavily based on his previous criminal record and it was highlighted that he had been arrested eight times before for violent offenses.
Moreover, his physical size was emphasized on to portray him as a dangerous individual beyond reform. The court ruled against him and Walter Triplett Jr. was found guilty of felonious assault. He was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 18 years behind bars for his crime.
Where is Walter today?
Even though Walter Triplett Jr. was arrested and sentenced, his defense team did not give up. They filed an appeal claiming bias during the trial and that he had been treated unfairly by the court. The Court of Appeals accepted the plea and a re-trial began.
The prosecution once again contested fiercely and even presented CCTV footage which showed clearly that Michael was standing by the side when Walter punched him. He was once again found guilty and this time of all charges against him. This included involuntary manslaughter, which had been rejected in the first trial. Due to this, his sentencing was extended to 20 years.
Walter Triplett Jr. maintains that he was treated unfairly by the criminal justice system owing to his skin color and that both juries overseeing his case were predominantly white.
The prosecution responded to these allegations by Walter stating that the judge who sentenced him belonged to the same race as him and that his accusations had no grounds.
Walter Triplett Jr. is 43 years old now and is currently serving his sentence at the Richland Correctional Institution in Mansfield, Ohio. He will once again present his case at his parole hearing which will take place in 2029.
