Youssef Khater, a scammer from Denmark, featured in season 1, episode 3 of the 2022 Netflix docuseries Worst Roommate Ever. The episode, titled "Marathon Man", covered Youssef's time in Santiago, Chile, in 2011, where he encountered and attempted to murder a Texan named Callie Quinn.

Youssef was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to around 600 days in prison. He has had run-ins with the law at various places and got into legal trouble.

Since his release from Chilean prison, his movements have been tracked by the Wordpress blog Youssef Khater scammer, which was started by Carlos Medina, one of his former financial backers who claimed Youssef defrauded him.

According to the blog, Youssef was jailed in Nicaragua in 2019, only to be extradited back to Denmark by the end of the year, and he continues scamming people through various fake identities.

In one of his most well-known crimes, which was covered by Worst Roommate Ever, Youssef Khater, while living in Chile, claimed to be a Palestinian native who aspired to be a marathon runner. He leveraged this identity to secure sponsorships from sympathetic backers like Carlos Medina and Carlos Kraus.

However, he never followed through on his promise to become a marathon runner, claiming an injury prevented him from participating. Per a report from Texas Monthly, a medical exam revealed that he had lied about his injury.

Youssef then proceeded to befriend Callie Quinn, a Texas native, who he shared a 12-room hostel with. He eventually convinced Callie to move to a run-down apartment under his ownership, charging her and others he'd convinced $1000 in security deposit fees.

Per Callie's testimony, her association with Youssef ended with him luring her into a tire store, bashing her head with a toilet seat and burying her alive. Callie eventually survived and escaped, and Youssef was arrested.

During the subsequent investigation, more of Youssef's crimes were unearthed, like the fact that he'd met his backers alongside a British marathon runner named Dominic Rayner, who he allegedly swindled out of $50,000 by claiming he needed to borrow the money to buy sporting gear and pay for an apartment.

Other lies emerged about his Palestinian identity, as Callie's attorney, Rocio Berrios, discovered that Youssef's family was of Lebanese descent and had cut off all contact with him. Berrios also discovered that Khater had a pior criminal history in Denmark.

Berrios charged Youssef with attempted murder and fraud, resulting in his conviction and sentencing to 602 days in prison.

After serving his sentence, Youssef was extradited to Denmark and later traveled to Costa Rica, where he assumed the fake identity of Joseph Carter and romanced a woman named Marie Taylor, per reporting from Diario Extra.

Marie eventually accused him of cleaning out her bank account, claiming that while they lived together, Youssef had been surreptitiously withdrawing money from her account through various ATMs. Another man Youssef allegedly scammed was Todd Flanders, from whom he had borrowed $3,500 under false pretenses.

Per reporting from Digital Spy and the Wordpress blog Youssef Khater Scammer, in 2019, he was arrested in Nicaragua and was subsequently extradited back to Denmark.

After spending a few months in jail on pending charges, Youssef Khater was eventually released and is now reportedly continuing his scams under new fake identities.

Worst Roommate Ever began its second season on June 26, 2024, and is available for streaming on Netflix.
