A brief recap of Golden Globes broadcasting history

The Golden Globes awards were first aired by NBC in 1958 and back then was broadcast locally. In 1964, the network started airing the show nationally until 1968, when the Federal Communications Commission accused the show of misleading the public regarding its winners. This led NBC to cease broadcasting the awards until 1974.

In the 1990s, Dick Clark Productions (DCP) brought back the show by making a deal with NBC in 1993 to air the awards. This deal included a special rule that let DCP stay as the producer of Golden Globes as long as NBC had broadcasting rights.

Over the years, the partnership had its ups and downs, including a canceled show in 2008 due to a Writers Guild strike and a 2010 legal fight between DCP and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) over revenue and digital rights.

NBC declined to air the 2022 ceremony following a boycott but resumed its partnership in 2023 for a one-year deal. In March 2024, CBS secured a five-year agreement with DCP to broadcast the Golden Globes, starting with the 82nd ceremony in 2025.
