White Lies season 1 brings a gripping story of an investigative journalist who got dragged back into her turbulent past and her estranged brother's life after he was murdered. As she tries to prove her brother's teenage kids' innocence after they became primary suspects, she gets caught up in the ugly and dangerous underbelly of the picturesque and rich beauty of the South African town of Bishopcourt.

South African actor Brendon Daniels joins the lead cast of White Lies season 1 as Detective Forty Bell, who doesn't get along great with Edie. Daniels is known for his roles in South African shows like Die Francois Toerien and Vallei van Sluiers and international productions like Four Corners, Trackers, and I Now Pronounce You Black and White.
Dormer and Daniels' characters, Edie and Forty Bell, are the two people investigating the murder of Edie's brother, Andrew. Forty Bell believes Andrew's kids Daniel MacKenzie, played by Daniel Schulz, and Jamie, played by Morgan Santo, did it, but Edie believes they are innocent, and she's eager to prove the detective wrong. The story is set in a wealthy neighborhood in Cape Town called Bishopscourt, where people are rich, secretive, and sometimes dangerous. The show's plotline reads:
"As Edie investigates, she finds herself at loggerheads with veteran detective Forty Bell, and grapples with the crumbling local police force, a corrupt political system, and the secretive world of extreme Cape Town wealth."
South African actor Kiroshan Naidoo, best known for Afterlife of the Party and The Mauritanian, and Daniel Janks, who starred in An Act of Defiance, are also regular cast members in the series. Joining them in recurring roles are Sunny Yoon, Clayton Everton, Ivan Abrahams, Athenkosi Mfamela, Carly-Jo Levy, Brandon Jones, Warrick Grier, and Katlego Lebogang.
