The Zodiac Killer has been the subject of many forms of art over the past decades, the latest coming from Netflix, titled This is the Zodiac Speaking, which also involves Arthur Leigh Allen, a former teacher later charged with molestation.
While it's nearly certain that the identity of the Zodiac Killer, who terrorized the Bay Area in the late 1960s, will never be discovered, the search for truth and curiosity that exists along with it continues.
One constant suspect in the case was Arthur Leigh Allen, a former Navy officer and school teacher, who was later arrested and sentenced for child molestation. However, as per the experience of two of his pupils, David and Connie Seawater, the latter of whom was also assaulted by Allen, Arthur Leigh Allen had also confessed to David that he was indeed the Zodiac Killer.
While no official record exists of that, it's the only time Arthur Leigh Allen, who remained the chief suspect for the series of murders linked to the Zodiac Killer, confessed to anyone.
Who was Arthur Leigh Allen, and what did he do?
Arthur Leigh Allen was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 18, 1933. After growing up in Vallejo, California, e took a variety of jobs, never really settling anywhere for long. In 1951, he joined the United States Navy and served there till his honorable discharge eight years later.
He went on to first study and get a job at several different schools. In 1966, Allen was hired as a teacher at Valley Springs Elementary School after moving to Valley Springs, California. In the 1960s, he also met David and Connie Seawater and their mother Phylis. The children bonded very well with Arthur Leigh Allen and reportedly became very close to the family.
Allen reportedly took the children out often and even took them on long drives. During one of these trips, Connie and David recalled that Allen came back with "red stuff on his hands," looking exhausted.
They were around the same place at around the same time when Robert Domingos, 18, and Linda Edwards, 17, were murdered. These murders were not linked to the Zodiac Killer, but Connie and David begged to differ.
In 1966, David and Connie remembered being drugged by Arthur Leigh Allen when on a trip. A day before that, Cheri Jo Bates was found dead around the region, which the Seawaters believe was another of Allen's victims.
The murders also abruptly stopped after Allen was arrested for molestation in 1974, which seemed to strongly suggest that he was behind the murders.
In 1992, when David got in touch with Allen on his mother's insistence, he confessed to having molested Connie after drugging them. When David asked if he was the Zodiac killer, Arthur reportedly admitted that he was. Allen died on August 26, 1992, at the age of 58.
To date, it hasn't been officially confirmed if he really was the Zodiac Killer, but he also remains the most likely subject to date.
Netflix's three-part documentary aims to uncover the case with all the evidence that is available. It will also dive into the crimes of the Zodiac Killer.
This is the Zodiac Speaking is now streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
