With the Yellowstone season 5 part 2 release on Paramount+, the series has delved deep into the conflicts along the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch for its final season. The series is a contemporary Western drama that follows the lives of ranch life set against a Texan background.
While fleshing out its characters one last time, the series dropped in a mention of someone significant to the landscape, even dedicating the mid-season episode to his memory: Billy Klapper. Unlike the characters in the show, Billy Klapper is a real-life person. He was a famous spur maker who made single-piece spurs for cowboys. He was also one of the last people in the West who crafted these unique spurs.
Season 5 episode 9 of the series alludes to Klapper and also features a cameo of the man himself. In a scene from the episode, Rip admires a pair of spurs at a local shop in Pampa. He is told that, in that area of Texas, every rancher and cowboy knows who Billy Klapper is. The spurs Rip liked were crafted by him. In the same setting, Klapper makes a brief appearance playing himself.
The official summary for the drama series reads:
"A ranching family in Montana faces off against others encroaching on their land."
Who was Billy Klapper in real life? Yellowstone cameo explored
Billy Klapper was a renowned spur maker who crafted the first pair of spurs in 1966, during the time that he worked as a ranch head. He was heavily influenced by another legendary spur maker, Adolph Bayers, whose style he often adapted into his designs. Soon, Klapper started noticing a huge demand for his spurs, which prompted him to switch to a spur-making business as a full-time job. He began to expand his business and gain more acclaim.
Even though he started in Texas, news of the newly created spurs expanded quickly. Klapper's works soon started gaining global recognition due to his innovative approach to design. He was acknowledged by the entire community of ranchers and cowboys who used his spurs.
With a small workshop located in Pampa, he soon worked on developing 200 spurs a year, with 680 patterns of custom spur designs. This was the work mentioned in season 5 episode 9 of the series.
Apart from being mentioned in Yellowstone, Klapper also filmed a cameo in the series where he played himself on screen. Unfortunately, the renowned spur-maker passed away in September, before the release of the final season and was unable to watch the scenes of himself featuring on the show. The mid-season episode of season 5 was dedicated to his memory, and a tribute to the setting of the show.
Klapper died on September 10, 2024, at the age of 87. He is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Yeates and Elizabeth Wilson, and six grandchildren.
