Dune: Prophecy's premiere episode, which aired on HBO on November 17, 2024, introduced a number of compelling characters for fans of the show. Among them, one character that stood out and gained popularity among the audience, due to his seemingly mysterious and morally ambiguous nature, was Desmond Hart, who plays one of the leading characters in the show.
Some viewers quickly observed that the character had a remarkable resemblance to Duncan Idaho from the Dune feature films. For those unfamiliar, Idaho's character in the films was portrayed by Jason Mamoa who was House Atreides's swordmaster and one of Paul's mentors.
Having said that, Desmond Hart's character in Dune: Prophecy is a soldier who has survived numerous battles on Arrakis, which positions him as a sort of expert in desert survival, giving him a competitive advantage. Hart's character is not a part of Frank Herbert's books and has been created for the show, leaving him shrouded in mystery.
Desmond Hart's character in Dune: Prophecy is skillfully portrayed by Travis Fimmel, who some may recognize from series such as Vikings (2013–2017) and Raised by Wolves (2020–2022).

Everything to know about the charismatic soldier in Dune: Prophecy and his pivotal role in the storyline
Desmond Hart's character makes an appearance halfway through the first episode of Dune: Prophecy and introduces himself as the only survivor of the attack that took place on Arrakis. Hart arrives at Emperor Javicco Corrino's palace on Salusa Secundus and states that the attacks the Emperor insists were carried out by the Fremen forces were actually not done by them.
He says that supporters of the Imperium carried out these actions. Additionally, he proposes that the assaults appeared to be a tactic to compel the Emperor to assist the marriage of his daughter, Princess Ynez.
Later in the episode, Hart and the Emperor engage in another discussion about this matter, and it seems that Hart's arguments sway the Emperor as he re-evaluates his previous choices and reflects on how he arrived at that decision.
After this event, viewers who have begun to follow the show are somewhat doubtful about the nature of Desmond Hart's character in the show.
While he seems to be a friend of the Emperor at first, assisting him in understanding things and identifying his adversaries, his character appears to possess a somewhat domineering and manipulating trait, enabling him to lead the Emperor to accept beliefs contrary to what he held before in just a few discussions.
Who plays Desmond Hart in Dune: Prophecy?
As previously mentioned, Desmond Hart's character in Dune: Prophecy is portrayed by Travis Fimmel. Born to parents Jennie and Chris, on 15 July 1979 in Echuca, Victoria, Australia, Fimmel got into acting in 2002. However, his first significant piece of work came out in 2003 when he appeared in the role of John Clayton/Tarzan in the show Tarzan.
In the shows that he appeared after that, Fimmel assumed more or less leading roles, including stints in The Beast (2009), Vikings (2013−2017), Raised by Wolves (2020–2022), and Black Snow (2023-present). He also made several appearances in films such as Surfer, Dude (2008), Maggie's Plan (2015), and Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan (2019).
The next episode of Dune: Prophecy airs on HBO on November 24, 2024.
