The awaited mythological dark-comedy series Kaos was released on Netflix on August 29, 2025. The fantasy series has risen to become one of the most popular series on the streaming platform. The Greek mythology-based show is packed with references to some legendary figures and some figures who are not much known.
The Netflix series is a contemporary retelling of the Greek gods, that explores the topic of what happens to Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) once he experiences a midlife crisis. The solution is complete anarchy! The chaos that ensues following Zeus' midlife crisis is caused by a prophecy made by the three Fates in the series. The prophecy reads:
"A line appears, the order wanes, the family falls and kaos reigns."
The prophecy brings about anarchy in the modern Greek world created in the series when Zeus discovers a wrinkle (a line) on his forehead, which he interprets as the beginning of the end for him. So who are these Fates, who prophesize Zeus' downfall?

The Fates in Netflix's Kaos explained
The Fates are first introduced in the second episode of the series when Dionysus (Nabhaan Rizwan) and Orpheus (Killian Scott) begin their venture into the underworld to retrieve Riddy (Aurora Perrineau).
As per Greek mythology, the Fates are a trio of sisters who are the goddesses of destiny. They are feared and revered among gods and mortals. They decide the fates of human beings and also make prophecies about Gods which turn true. As per mythology, human beings have the gift of free will however, their life cycle is pre-determined by the three Fates.
The three Fates sisters are named Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. Clotho means 'the spinner' and she spins the thread of life as per Greek mythology. The second sister named Lachesis measures the thread of life spun by Clotho. The third sister Atropos decides where to cut the string of life. The three sisters handle the cycle of life in mythology.
In Kaos, the three sisters are shown to play a similar role while also passing people into the underworld. Clotho is played by Ché, Lachesis by Suzy Eddie Izzard, and Atropos is played by Sam Buttery. In the series, they conduct a game that people wanting to pass into the underworld have to win.
What part do the Fates play in Kaos?
Concerning the series, the Fates are the agents of chaos who spur Zeus into a frenzy with their prophecy about his eventual fall. The series centers on how Zeus is scared of the prophecy doled out by the Fates. By the end of the first season of Kaos the Fates and Prometheus (Stephen Dillane) emerge as collaborators in a massive scheme that will shake the Gods.
The Fates create destiny throughout the series influencing major decisions throughout to ensure that their prophecy bears fruition. They manipulate several major characters throughout the series including Poseidon, Minos, Prometheus, and Charon among others.
Without providing spoilers for the series, all that can be said about the Fates is they are the orchestrators of the plot that unfolds. Ironically the fate of the Fates is left in a cliffhanger by the end of the season as Zeus unleashes his fury on them.
Kaos has a total of eight episodes released for the first season. All episodes are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
