Special Ops: Lioness season 2 had a 2-episode premiere on October 27, 2024, on Paramount+. The second half of episode 2 introduces a new character, Josephina Carrillo. It soon becomes clear that Carrillo would be the new Lioness in the CIA operation.

After Sergeant Cruz Manuelos’ departure in season 1, Joe McNamara needed a new Lioness in Special Ops: Lioness season 2. Carrilo has been recruited in that role not just because she's a decorated pilot, having served the army capably for years, but also because the target of the new operation is her blood relation.

The character is played by the American actress and model Genesis Rodriguez. Before season 2 of Special Ops: Lioness, she appeared in shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Umbrella Academy, among others.

Genesis Rodriguez has had a prolific career

Rodriguez was born on July 29, 1987, in Miami, Florida, U.S.. Her mother, Luisa Carolina Pérez Rodríguez is a Cuban model, while her father, José Luis Rodríguez, is a Venezuelan actor and singer.

The star of Special Ops: Lioness season 2 started her career playing leading roles in telenovelas like Prisionera (2004), Dame Chocolate (2007) and Doña Bárbara (2008–2009).

Her breakthrough role came in 2012 when she played the love interest of Will Ferrell in the movie Casa de Mi Padre. The next year, she starred in the action-thriller film The Last Stand, in the role of an FBI agent named Ellen Richards. Rodriguez has also lent her voice in the Disney film Big Hero 6, playing the role of Honey Lemon.

Some of Rodriguez’s film credits are as follows:

  • Casa de Mi Padre (2012)
  • Identity Thief (2013)
  • Delirium (2018)

Rodriguez plays Josephina Carrillo in Special Ops: Lioness season 2

Much of the Special Ops: Lioness season 2 premiere is about the kidnapping of Congresswoman Hernandez and her eventual rescue at the hands of Joe and company. Cruz has already left the work, and in her search for the next Lioness, Joe comes across Josephina Carrillo, who seems the perfect candidate for the role.

For one, Carrillo is a well-decorated pilot and has years of combat experience. Further, Carrillo is the daughter of immigrant parents, and her estranged uncle, Alvaro Carrillo, runs the Los Tigres Cartel in Mexico. The Los Tigres Cartel is suspected to be involved in the abduction of the Congresswoman.

Joe designs an elaborate plan: she would have Carrillo publicly thrown out of the army. Her publicized eviction from the army would attract the attention of her uncle, who would no doubt want to recruit her, given her experience and expertise as a pilot. He might ask her to take care of the shipment of drugs across the border.

Carrillo’s character is a crucial one in Special Ops: Lioness season 2

Even though Carrillo’s father claims not to have any contact with her criminal brother anymore, the CIA suspects that there's some interaction between the brothers, as Carrillo’s father’s lavish lifestyle is not concomitant with his earnings.

Carrillo, though, is known as a patriot. First, she's tasked with making contact with her uncle and infiltrating his organization to get information on behalf of the CIA. Further, the CIA suspects that there's a Chinese agent who could also be behind the Congresswoman’s kidnapping. The new Lioness has to get near this agent as well in Special Ops: Lioness season 2.

Towards the end of episode 2 of season 2, Joe approaches Carrillo with the job offer. Carrillo knows very well what the challenging job entails as she agrees to sign up for it after some thought. Speaking to TVLine on October 28, 2024, Genesis Rodriguez said about her character’s decision to join the operation:

“She absolutely knows that once she says yes, she knows what she signing up for — possibly sacrificing herself. And that’s the choice, that’s the hard, hard yes.”

The next episode of Special Ops: Lioness season 2 will be released on November 10, 2024.
