Monster season 3 is the third installment of the crime anthology series Monster, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. The Netflix series premiered its first season, Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, on September 21, 2022. The second season of the series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, is slated for release on September 19, 2024.
During a promotional event for the show's second season in Los Angeles on September 16, 2024, Ryan Murphy announced that Monster season 3 will feature Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein. Gein was a serial killer and grave robber who gained notoriety in the 1950s for murdering people and making household items and clothing out of human remains.
Also known as the 'Butcher of Plainfield,' Gein will be the subject of Monster season 3, which will start production in October 2024. Previously, Gein's story has served as the basis for fictional serial killers like Norman Bates in Psycho, Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs.
Here's everything to know about the Monster season 3 actor, Charlie Hunnam
1) He was discovered while shopping
Charlie Hunnam is an English actor, who got his acting break in a very unusual way. He was scouted by a production manager at the age of 17 while shopping with his brother on Christmas Eve in 1997. The manager asked him to audition for a small part in the teen drama series, Byker Grove. He ended up landing the role of Jason Chuckle for a three-episode arc in the show in 1998.
2) He is best known for starring in Sons of Anarchy
Undoubtedly, Charlie's most prominent acting role is playing Jackson 'Jax' Teller in the popular outlaw biker drama, Sons of Anarchy, on FX. The series features Teller as a young father trying to navigate his family responsibilities with his duty towards the outlaw motorcycle club, SAMCRO, in the fictional town of Charming, California.
The series ran for seven seasons and featured Katey Sagal, Kim Coates, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, and other renowned actors. For his performance in the show, Hunnam received nominations for Best Actor in a Drama Series at the Critics' Choice Television Awards twice in 2012 and 2015.
3) He was the first choice to play Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades franchise
In 2013, he was cast to play Christian Grey opposite Dakota Johnson's Anastasia Steele in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. However, he dropped out of filming three weeks before the start of production. Charlie left the project begrudgingly as he had to balance shooting for this film with the seventh season of Sons of Anarchy and Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak at the same time.
The Irish actor Jamie Dornan ended up playing the hunky businessman, Christian Grey, in the Fifty Shades franchise. Lastly, the film series became a massive box office success, earning more than $1.3 billion globally.
4) He is a germaphobe
Charlie Hunnam is a self-described germaphobe. He has admitted to hating doing kissing and s*x scenes onscreen due to his fear of germs.
The Pacific Rim actor explained the origin of his phobia to People Magazine in 2017:
"When I was maybe eight or nine, there was a parasite from dogs in the north of England that, if you ingested it, could turn you blind. We had a thing in schools to educate the kids about the importance of hygiene, specifically around dogs, because we had a few kids who went blind. That horrified me."
5) He has a penchant for playing troubled men
As Charlie gears up to play a serial killer in Monster season 3, he can draw upon his past experiences of playing emotionally disturbed characters to prepare for the role. Among his so-called 'trilogy of mad men' roles are Patric in Children of Men, Bosie in Cold Mountain, and Pete Dunham in Green Street.
