Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries is a true crime documentary series that has kept viewers on the edge for nearly three decades with its first volume released on January 20, 1987, by NBC. The series went through several releasing networks and ultimately Netflix currently holds the release rights of the show.
Unsolved Mysteries has four volumes and the recent volume 4 with five episodes was released on July 31, 2024. The episodes of the show focus on different crime stories that cover serial killings, and murder mysteries.
The first episode of the show is named Who Was Jack the Ripper? The episode tells about the mystery of a serial killer Jack the Ripper whose identity was never revealed.
Jack the Ripper brutally killed five women namely Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly in 1888 and was never caught by the police.
The killing happened in the Whitechapel district of London, England. During the investigation in the 1880s, the police suspected hundreds of people out of which the series shows five men as the suspects of being Jack the Ripper. It included John Pizer, Montague John Druitt, Francis Tumblety, Aaron Kosminski, and Sir William Withey Gull.
The 5 suspects of Jack the Ripper Case in Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries
John Pizer
The series Unsolved Mysteries shows John Pizer as the first suspect of being Jack the Ripper. John was also known as the Leather Apron and he was a bootmaker. The police suspected John of being the killer after the first two killings and arrested him without any solid evidence.
Later it was proven that John Pizer wasn’t the murderer. He had alibis who could confirm his innocence as they were with him during the night of the murders. Soon John was set free followed by another suspect getting onto police target.
Montague John Druitt
Montague John Druitt in Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries was shown as the most believed suspect to be Jack the Ripper. Montague was a Barrister and teacher in South London but he was removed from his position for unknown reasons in November 1888.
Soon after the last murder of Mary Jane Kelly on November 9, 1888, Montague killed himself, and his body was found floating in the River Thames on December 31, 1888. After his suicide the killings had stopped, and the police suspected him to be Jack the Ripper.
Adding to police suspicion was the confirmation by Montague’s family that he could be a potential murderer as he was mentally unstable. His suicide note also included that he was going mad.
Francis Tumblety
Francis Tumblety is another suspect shown in Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries who was arrested before the last murder in November 1888. Francis was an American who claimed to be a doctor but was actually a fraud. He was arrested by the police but got bail after the fifth murder as it dismissed the possibility of him being Jack the Ripper.
As soon as Francis got bail he left for the United States of America and never came back to London. Francis mentioned the reason that he visited Whitechapel as he was fascinated by the murders and wanted to know more about them.
Aaron Kosminski
Another suspect shown in Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries is Aaron Kosminski. Kosminski is a name that was very much involved in different cases in London but his first name was never mentioned. There are speculations that Aaron Kosminski could be the same Kosminski but the historians could not confirm it.
Kosminski was described as a “Polish Jew who was put into an insane asylum” but Aaron never went to one. The two senior investigation officers Sir Robert Anderson and Chief Inspector Donald Sutherland Swanson believed that Aaron was the actual murderer but was not proven in the end, due to lack of proof.
Sir William Withey Gull
The last suspect shown in the first episode of Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries is William Withey Gull. Gull is often shown as Jack the Ripper in other series and films where the case is discussed.
There are stories of Gull being the doctor of the royal prince Albert Victor, who assigned him the task of killing five friends including Mary Jane Kelly who was the nanny to Alice, the illegitimate daughter of the Prince.
The story says that the five women Mary Jane Kelly, Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, and Catherine Eddowes blackmailed the prince about revealing the truth about his daughter, because of which they got killed.
All these theories remain baseless as the actual killer would have died long back and nothing consolidated was found to identify Jack the Ripper. Fans of true crime documentaries can watch Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix.
