American crime drama The Closer ran from 2005 to 2012. The show originally aired on the TNT channel and its seven seasons are now available to stream on Peacock.

The plot follows LAPD's Major Crimes Unit led by the cunning deputy chief, Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick). Brenda and her team solve complex cases and deriving criminal confessions is a part of their job. Brenda struggles with several issues throughout the series, including a department mole.

In episode 20 titled Armed Response of the seventh and final season, the identity of the person feeding vital information to Peter Goldman is revealed. The leak in the department turns out to be Detective David Gabriel's girlfriend, Anne, planted by lawyer Peter Goldman.

Gabriel, a key member of Brenda's team, discovers that Anne has extracted sensitive information. This shocking news affects him personally. It shakes the Major Crimes Unit's trust and leads to a dramatic ending.

The official synopsis of episode 20 reads:

"A security guard and a veteran are found dead outside a home; Brenda's investigation is stifled by the District Attorney's office; Raydor and Pope find the leak in the department."

The Closer season 7 episode 20 unveils Anne as the leak in the department

In the penultimate episode of The Closer season 7, the revelation of the leak within the department adds a pivot to the entire series. Detective David Gabriel (portrayed by Corey Reynolds) learns that his girlfriend, Anne, is part of the plan made by Peter Goldman.

Goldman, the persistent lawyer suing Brenda and the LAPD, pays off Anne’s law school loans in exchange for inside information about the Major Crimes Unit. On the other hand, Gabriel feels extremely hurt by Anne's betrayal because he shared private information with her as he thought it was a genuine relationship. His realization of Anne’s deceit is a turning point in the series.

Post the revelation, Gabriel faces the harsh reactions of his colleagues. While some co-workers like Flynn grudgingly accept his apology, others like Sanchez snub him. This division within the team faces the strain that the betrayal caused, making Gabriel’s position even more precarious.

Brenda's choice not to let Gabriel resign makes things even more difficult because the team now has to deal with the consequences of this breach of trust.
