Ralph Waite was a veteran American actor who was active in television and films for around six decades, with Jackson Gibbs (NCIS) being one of his memorbale roles. He gained recognition for his portrayal of John Walton Sr., on the popular TV series The Waltons. He had other notable credits in films and shows like Cool Hand Luke, Five Easy Pieces, and Bones.

In the NCIS series, Jackson is portrayed as a man with strong moral values and a straightforward personality, which explains his son Leroy's ethical code and approach to life as well. The relationship between Jackson and his son is complex, marked by both concern for each other and tension because of their choices in life.

Jackson Gibbs makes his first appearance in season 6 and is mentioned multiple times up till season 19 and Harmon's departure. His strained relationship with his son is due to multiple reasons including his wife's suicide, Leroy's decision to join NCIS, and their differing outlooks on life. His character is pivotal in framing Jethro Gibbs's character and psyche in the NCIS series.
