My Brilliant Friend season 4, the final installment of the famous Italian romantic drama series, is finally arriving. Based on Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels, the ten-episode series will premiere on HBO on September 9, 2024. Later, it will be released on Rai on November 11, 2024.

After its third season got a massive positive reception, the series was renewed for its fourth and final season in March 2022. Season 4 is directed by the Italian filmmaker Laura Bispuri, known for her notable works including il paradiso del Pavone (2021), Daughter of Mine (2018), The Love Europe Project (2019), and Sworn Virgin (2015).

In My Brilliant Friend season 4, the two protagonists, Elena and Lila, return as grown-up adults. Elena escaped Naples with her depressed childhood locality and then came back. While Lila stayed in Naples, she couldn't continue her education and ended up being Stefano Carracci's wife. Alba Rohrwacher plays the role of Elena, while Irene Maiorino has been cast to play the role of Lila.

Rafaella Cerullo, commonly known as Lila, is the lifelong best friend of Elena Greco, also known as Lenù. In My Brilliant Friend season 4, Elena and Lila have grown up as adults. Unlike Elena, who went out of Naples and had a career and a marriage, Lila had to stay in Naples itself. She was a smart young child but couldn't continue her education after elementary school.

Lila had to get married to Stefano Carracci, and when Elena came back to Naples, she couldn't find her childhood friend anymore. It is the absence of Lila that makes Elena write a memoir, which in the end becomes "my brilliant friend." Lila's life is a harsh depiction of the condition of women during the 1950s who are devoid of the basic freedom that they deserve.

Her impoverished background, under the harsh patriarchal norms, forces her to get settled as a wife and a mother. Lila's way of revolt comes when she joins the Italian criminal organization "The Camorra." In My Brilliant Friend season 4, Elena goes on a journey to find her childhood best friend back, bring her out of the underworld, and reunite finally.

My Brilliant Friend season 4 is produced by Domenico Procacci and Domenico in collaboration with Freemantle Media, RAI Fiction, and HBO Entertainment. Saverio Costanzo, who has been one of the directors in the first two seasons, serves as one of its executive producers. The fourth season is written by Elena Ferrante, Laura Paolucci, Costanzo, and Francesco Piccolo.
