Lanterns seems to be the next DC project that will be rolling cameras as Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen has been cast in the role of Sinestro in the series. Playing the main antagonist of the show and a long-time enemy of Green Lantern, Thomsen will be joining the likes of Kyler Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart in the upcoming DC Studios production.

Prior to being cast in Lanterns, Thomsen was best known for starring in the show Banshee. The news was first reported by Deadline. In the comic books, Sinestro was a mentor of Hal Jordan, a Green Lantern, and had quite a manipulative nature to him. He was driven by power and greed which led to him turning on his own people, the Green Lantern Corps.

Sinestro's origins in the comics explored following Lanterns casting

Thaal Sinestro is often portrayed as the arch-nemesis of Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the comics. He was created by writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane and first appeared in Green Lantern Vol 2 #7 in August 1961. Once regarded as the greatest Green Lantern of all time, he quickly descended into villainy which led him to assembling the Sinestro Corps.

Responsible for Sector 1417, Thaal Sinestro was able to eradicate crime over there and imposed his law in the area as well. Due to his accomplishments, he was assigned a mentor by the name of Hal Jordan - who in the future went on to become Sinestro's arch-nemesis as well. In the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro was close to his friend Abin Sur as well.

However, when Atrocitus killed Abin Sur, Sinestro brought him in for his crimes. There, Atrocitus warned Sinestro of a dark fate he would face and this caused Sinestro to become unhinged as stress took over him. He started using questionable tactics and imposed unjust rules as well. He became the dictator of his home planet Korugar as well which led to his people revolting against him.

This led to him falling out with Hal Jordan as his mentee disagreed with his ways. Sinestro was then initially tried for his crimes with Jordan testifying against him as well and the villain swore revenge on his mentee. Sinestro was then banished to the Antimatter Universe where he met the Weaponers of Qward who gave him his Yellow Lantern Ring and turned him into the villain he is today.

What is Lanterns about?

Lanterns is a DC Studios series that is being created by Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King. Talking about the project during DC Studios' slate reveal, James Gunn said the following:

"This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan," said Gunn while unveiling the project. "We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU."

The series will star Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in the lead roles of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Currently, there is no release date for the series available. For further updates, stay tuned with us.
