Who were Erik and Lyle Menendez? What is the story behind the docuseries?
The Erik and Lyle Menendez case began on August 20, 1989, when the two brothers shot their parents José and Kitty at their Beverly Hills mansion. Immediately after the killings, the brothers encountered the local police. They gave the false alibi that they were at a film festival when the murder took place.
Afterwards, Erik and Lyle Menendez began to spend their parents' inheritance on luxury items and expensive trips at a quick rate. As the police investigation continued, the authorities grew suspicious of the brothers and their habits and tried unsuccessfully to get a confession from them.
Erik was the one who confessed about the murder to his therapist Jerome Oziel, and this confession made its way to the police through Oziel's mistress Judalon. Both brothers were arrested after this. The brothers were charged with murder, and the case became a sensation when their trial was publically broadcast on television in 1993.
Leslie Abramson was the Menendez brothers' defense lawyer, who argued that they murdered their parents out of fear. The defense presented the case that the brothers had been s*xually absurd by their father as children, and they had retaliated. Their mother Kitty was also described as an enabler who took the father's side. Two cousins of the Menendez family also supported this defense.
Erik and Lyle Menendez were eventually convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to murder. They were given life sentences by the court on July 2, 1996, with no possibility for parole.
