The Crime drama television miniseries When They See Us, which chronicles the infamous Central Park jogger case and the Central Park Five group, was released on Netflix on May 31, 2019. For the uninitiated, the Central Park jogger case chronicled the physical and se**al assault of a female jogger, Trisha Meili, on April 19, 1989, while she was on her run in Central Park.
It was also reported that after the group of assailants manhandled, overpowered, displaced from her initial location, brutally assaulted Meili, and dumped her near a ravine. Four hours after she went missing, the police located her near the ravine and sent her to a medical facility, where she remained in a coma for close to two weeks.
The incident shook New York City, and an investigation revealed that at least twenty to thirty individuals, mostly in their teens, had entered the park. Public outcry led to the arrest of Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise, who were convicted of physically and sexually assaulting Meili. Collectively, they became known as the Central Park Five.
About the real Central Park Five and their case in Netflix's When They See Us
Netflix's four-part docuseries When They See Us does not shy away from sharing the chilling details of the Central Park jogger case, including details about the Central Park Five, comprising Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise, who were the main convicts in the case.
It also does not hesitate to examine the weaknesses in their conviction and the deficiencies in information shared with the public at that time. This included the authorities reportedly pressurizing the individuals reprimanded in the case into giving video testimonies admitting to their crimes in the absence of a parent or any legal aid, despite them not being of legal age.
When this video footage first became public, the Central Park Five were tried in court and sentenced. However, when it was later found that the authorities had inadequately investigated the case, including withholding crucial information and manipulating those convicted, people rose against the authorities and demanded justice.
Later, in 2001, a man named Matias Reyes met Korey Wise, who was being held at the Auburn Correctional Facility and confessed to having se**ually assaulted Trisha Meili.
Reyes also confessed to his crimes in front of a corrections officer later and said that he was the only one involved in the act. The authorities ran DNA tests on Reyes and found that his results matched the semen that was collected from Meili's body. He was then taken into custody for his crimes.
