Renard Spivey was shot in the leg in 2019
As per reports by Daily Mail, in 2019, Renard Spivey, a veteran sheriff's deputy and also a TV show bailiff was arrested for the murder of his wife Patricia Spivey.
Patrica had multiple gunshot wounds on her body and was found dead inside a closet in the residence of the couple. Renard Spivey was also shot in the leg. As per CBS News, Renard Spivey was the first person to dial 911, to inform about Patricia’s death.
As per CBS, Renard claimed that Patricia was still breathing when he made the 911 call and he also tried chest compressions on her but she died on the spot.
Renard was taken to a hospital, where the gunshot wound on his leg was treated. During interrogations, he revealed that his wife suspected that he was having an affair as there was a lack of intimacy in their marriage. Allegedly, Patricia did not want to kiss her husband, who tried to give her a goodnight kiss, on the night she was later found dead.
Allegedly, Patricia would not let her husband check her phone, which Renard Spivey found fishy. That night, after Patricia had fallen off to sleep, Renard took her phone and brought it into the closet. Moments later, Patricia appeared in the doorways holding Renard’s gun and asking for her phone back.
As per Renard’s statements, Patricia’s hands were on the trigger, and he wanted to get the weapon out of her hands. In the struggle to unarm her, Renard got shot and so did Patricia.
As per Renard, everything happened in a flash. About the same, he told 48 Hours:
"Everything happened so fast. When I grabbed the top of the weapon, she pulled back with a finger on the trigger and it went off and shot me in the leg."
Renard was arrested shortly after Patricia’s murder, however, he got bail at $50,000.
Renard was tried for Patricia’s murder in 2023
Four and a half years after the crime occurred, Renard went to trial in November 2023. His attorneys in court presented the death of the victim as unintentional. The case was then handed to a jury, who after 12 hours of deliberation over two days, declared the bailiff not guilty as per CBS News.
Renard’s lawyer DeGeurin, told 48 Hours that the gun with which Patricia and Renard was shot just needs a “slight pressure” to “go off.”
"There is no external safety on this gun. So, if someone's finger is on that trigger, all it takes is a slight pressure and it goes off."
