The Diplomat season 2 was released on Netflix on October 31, 2024. The second season picked up after the explosion at the end of season 1, interrupting the meeting between Hal Wyler and British MP Merritt Grove.
In the aftermath of the explosion, characters Stuart Hayford and Ronnie Buckhurst are also caught in the line of fire. Season 2 began with uncertainty over Ronnie's fate, but the character ended up dying after the emergency services failed to rescue them. This loss significantly impacted the other characters, as Ronnie was one of the major players in the plot.
Ronnie Buckhurst, played by actress Jess Chanliau, served as a part of Stuart Hayford's team and his deputy. Given that Buckhurst aided the majority of the characters in the show, their absence in season 2 will certainly be felt.
Ronnie Buckhurst's role in The Diplomat explored
Ronnie Buckhurst served as an American Foreign Service officer, working under Stuart Hayword, the UK Embassy's chief of mission, and Kate Wyler, the United States Ambassador working in the United Kingdom. Ronnie and Stuart shared a long-standing relationship that significantly influenced their characters and interactions throughout the series.
Ronnie assisted Stuart and Kate in various issues related to the United States, focusing on matters of democracy and diplomacy for the country. In season 1, Ronnie accompanied them quite a lot and was mostly by their side.

How did Ronnie die in The Diplomat?
At the end of season 1, Ronnie was caught in an explosion. The finale saw a private meeting set up between Merritt Grove and Hal, but Stuart and Ronnie tried to make sure that it didn't happen as they learned that an explosion was set to take place at the location of the meeting.
Luckily, Hal arrived late, allowing Ronnie to meet with Grove and inform him that he would be meeting Stuart instead. This disappointed Grove, who then decided to leave the location. As Ronnie walked with Grove toward his car, it ended up exploding, gravely injuring them. This was due to Grove opening the door to his car, which triggered an explosion.
While Grove certainly didn't make it out of the situation alive, Ronnie was rushed to the hospital as their survival was critical. In the opening of season 2, Ronnie can be seen being taken to the hospital on a stretcher. Unfortunately, Ronnie's injuries prove too serious, and the character ultimately died.
