What is the story of Scott Lee Kimball?
Born in Boulder, Colorado in 1966, Kimball was ten years old when his parents separated after his mother, Barb, came out as a lesbian. As reported by Daily Camera on November 3, 2018, Kimball and his brother Brett were teenagers when they shifted to their grandmother's moving house.
During this time, a neighbor named Theodore Peyton began se*ually abusing both brothers in his cabin in Nederland, Colorado. As reported by Daily Camera, Kimball was forcefully ra*ed and couldn't tell anyone as Peyton threatened to kill his father if he did. The abuse continued even after he moved to Hamilton, Montana for high school.
The abuse ended when Kimball attempted suicide at age 23 by shooting himself. He survived but was in a critical condition. By the time he recovered, Peyton had been arrested and imprisoned on charges of minor abuse. This long-lasting trauma led him to a life of crime.
He started by committing fraud with bad checks, which progressed to burglary. As per the Daily Camera article, Scott Lee Kimball married his first wife, Larissa Hentz, in 1993 and divorced her in 1997 after having two sons. Following the divorce, Hentz charged him with r*pe but managed to evade authorities.
In 2000, Kimball broke into Hentz's house and r*ped her again. When an arrest warrant was issued, he fled to Alaska, where he resumed committing fraud. After a scam of $25,000 in bad checks, he was convicted but persuaded the FBI to release him under one condition.
Kimball agreed to work for the Federals as a paid informant and soon started abusing his new position. He used his connections and newfound security to commit more burglaries, which eventually turned into assault and murder.
The victims of Scott Lee Kimball
1) LeAnn Emry
As per an article on The Snitch, Steve Holley was one of the inmates Kimball met while serving time in prison. LeAnn was Holley's girlfriend, a native of Colorado. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and began working as a stripper at the age of 24.
In late 2002, Kimball met LeAnn and involved her in a series of frauds involving bad checks and credit cards. While Holley was still in prison, LeAnn began to spend more time with him. On January 16, 2003, she visited her parents in Centennial, Colorado, and told them she was going on a trip to Mexico.
Instead, she joined Kimball to travel across the Western United States and commit a stream of check frauds. On January 29, 2003, the duo went on a hiking trip to the Bryson Canyon, Book Cliffs, in eastern Utah.
When they reached a dead end, Scott Lee Kimball forced her to kneel and shot her with a handgun. Her car was later found abandoned in Moab, Utah. As per The Charley Project, LeAnn's remains were discovered in March 2009 in a remote area near the border of Colorado and Utah.
2) Jennifer Marcum
As per The Snitch, Jennifer Marchum was a 25-year-old mother who moved from Illinois to Denver with her young son after dropping out of high school. She was paying her bills by working as a strip club dancer and looking for a reliable job opportunity. Kimball disguised himself as the owner of multiple coffee shops in Seattle and promised her a managerial position.
Kimball persuaded her to move to Seattle, but she eventually relocated to New York City. This was the last time she was seen alive. In February 2003, her abandoned car was found at the Denver International Airport. Although Scott Lee Kimball confessed to buying a $600 revolver and killing her, Jennifer's body has never been found.
3) Kaysi McLeod
As per The Snitch, Kaysi was a 19-year-old girl who mysteriously disappeared in August 2003. Her parents had separated when she was a child, and during her late teens, she fell into drug abuse. By the time she moved to Colorado in 2001, her mother, Lori McLeod, had started dating a man named Scott.
Lori and Kaysi were slowly rebuilding their relationship until Scott discovered drugs in the residence. Following a heated argument, Lori threatened to turn Kaysi over to the police. After the fight, Kaysi ran out of her house. Initially, they considered she would come back, but she didn't return.
When Kaysi missed her shift at the sandwich shop two days later, Lori decided to inform the police. However, the cops dismissed the case, stating that she was over 18 and could make her own decisions. Scott promised Lori he would find her daughter, but after a year of searching, she was not found.
As reported by Daily Camera on March 11, 2010, Lori eventually married Scott in Las Vegas, and they went on a honeymoon trip to Kremmling, Colorado. Years later, Kaysi McLeod's remains were found near that area.
4) Terry Kimball
Terry Kimball was Scott's uncle, who visited their house when his son Justin was hospitalized due to a medical emergency. As per The Snitch, Lori often disapproved of Terry's presence because of his regular drinking habits. Terry brought thousands of dollars in cash, intending to start a new business with Scott.
Before moving into Scott's house, Terry had an argument with him regarding the business. As reported by Daily Camera on March 13, 2010, Terry Kimball mysteriously disappeared just a few days after his arrival. Scott claimed that Terry had won money from the Ohio state lottery, met a stripper, and moved to Mexico.
As per the Daily Camera article, in the weeks following Terry's disappearance, Scott bought 21 head of cattle worth $20,000 from Brish, Colorado. Terry Kimball was never found, and years later, in 2009, his mummified remains were discovered in a remote mountain pass near Vail, Colorado.
As reported by ABC News on May 13, 2023, Scott Lee Kimball was found guilty in October 2009 of the murders of LeAnn Emry, Jennifer Marcum, Kaysi McLeod, and Terry Kimball.
