Twenty years after the murder of Laci Peterson, Netflix has just brought us a docuseries, American Murder: Laci Peterson, which shows viewers the intricate details about the disappearance and murder case of Peterson in December 2002.

Crime investigators worked day and night to get to the bottom of the homicide, along with the help of other officials, including the Criminal Investigative Profiler, Sharon Hagan.

Sharon was one of the leading officials involved in the investigation of Laci Peterson’s disappearance and murder. The Netflix docuseries features Hagan who brings a new perspective to the case and to the series regarding the heinous crime that was committed against Laci. She now works as a Clinical Psychologist, after dedicating years of her life to criminal investigations.

About Sharon Hagan: An Investigator turned Psychologist

Sharon Hagan started working as a Criminal Investigative Profiler and Special Agent Supervisor in the California Department of Justice in May 1987. Hagan studied criminal investigative analysis and crime scene analysis with the FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime and the International Criminal Investigative Analysis Fellowship.

Hagan was also the leading member of the California Bureau of Investigation’s Violent Crime Profiling Unit and was known for providing her services of investigative assistance, consultation, and training to numerous prosecutors and law enforcement agencies during her decades-long career.

Sharon has worked on innumerable cases of sexual assaults, serial crime investigations, homicides, assessment of violence potential, and the sexual victimization of children in other states. She was also involved in the investigation of the Laci Peterson case.

This was her last case and she left the world of criminal investigation to pursue a Master’s degree in Psychology at California State University, Sacramento, in 2004. The Investigator (now a Psychologist) served the California Department of Justice for the last time in July 2005.

Sharon Hagan graduated in 2006 and went on to earn a Doctor of Psychology degree in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University in 2009. Hagan became a licensed Post-Doctoral/Clinical Psychologist at California State University, Sacramento while working on the side as an independent Consultant in Behavioral Forensics (July 2005 to May 2012).

Hagan then started working as a Private Clinical Psychologist, providing psychotherapy and performing psychological testing, and evaluations for behavioral problems, medical issues, and learning disorders, among other things.

One of the lesser-known things about Sharon is that she is also a painter, passionate about making beautiful works of art. She started this hobby after receiving acrylic paint as a graduation gift from her friend, Mary. Soon she realized that after devoting several years to law enforcement, what truly made her happy was working on canvas with brushstrokes and colors.

About Laci Peterson's murder case

Laci Peterson was 27 years old and eight months pregnant when she was last seen in her home in Modesto, California, on Christmas Eve - December 24, 2002.

Detective Al Brocchini, at a press conference, said that the police did not believe Laci would leave without contacting her family.

"That is completely out of character for her," Detective Al commented.

Four months later, Laci and her unborn child's remains were found in the San Francisco Bay. Scott Peterson, Laci Peterson's husband, was convicted of the murder of Laci and their unborn son, who they planned to name Conner.

Scott was arrested near a golf course in San Diego on April 18, 2003, days after the bodies were recovered. It was also discovered that Scott Peterson was having an affair with a woman named Amber Frey.

The husband maintained his innocence but was convicted of first-degree murder in Laci Peterson's death, and second-degree murder in the death of their unborn son after a five-month-long trial. He is currently serving a life sentence in Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, California, without the possibility of parole.

Directed by Skye Borgman, Netflix's three-part docuseries - American Murder: Laci Peterson - features interviews with members of Laci and Scott Peterson's families and investigators who worked on the case almost two decades ago.
