Perhaps one of the most confusing aspects of Hulu's Tell Me Lies is its storyline that unfolds in two timelines, one in 2008 and the other in 2015. As a result of the same, the audiences often find it difficult to keep up with the developments of a particular timeline that might have led to specific incidents in the other.

One of the many instances where such confusion occurred was in the finale episode of Tell Me Lies season 1. In one of the scenes from the episode, it was revealed that Stephen was engaged to marry Lydia, one of Lucy's closest friends from her hometown.

Fans theories revolving upon learning Stephen and Lydia from Tell Me Lies were engaged

In the last few moments of the finale episode of season 1 of Tell Me Lies, titled The Bedrooms of Our Friends, it was revealed that Stephen was engaged. However, contrary to popular opinion, his fiancée was not Diana, but Lydia.

The audiences were left confused by the revelation, as the show never suggested that Stephen and Lydia could be a potential pair.

However, fans theorized about the possibilities that could have potentially led to their relationship and their subsequent engagement. Among the different theories that circulated widely was one that revolved around Stephen looking for his perfect job during season one of the show, which might have led him to Lydia since Lucy said her father could be a potential employer.

Another notion popular among fans is one they developed after seeing the first few episodes of Tell Me Lies season 2. Only three episodes of the second season have been aired so far. In those episodes, it appeared that Lucy and Lydia had a fallout.

Fans believe that this happened after Lucy called out Lydia's brother for abusing Pippa and several other of her acquaintances. The audience's theory is that Lucy may have turned in Lydia's brother to the cops and Stephen must have somehow gotten involved. Given their shared hatred for Lucy, they might have formed an unanticipated bond, eventually leading to their engagement.

Season 2 of Tell Me Lies could potentially explore Stephen and Lydia's relationship

On October 26, 2022, Oppenheimer spoke with Decider about the final twist of the season in Tell Me Lies, which featured the unexpected engagement of Stephen and Lydia.

Although she wasn't one for dramatic surprises, she revealed that she had always planned for this couple to come together. She said:

“That was actually the end of my pitch to Hulu, before they hired me. I was like, ‘And then he shows up with Lydia. I was like, ‘Who’s the craziest person he could show up with?’ And I don’t think anyone will see that coming, so I’m excited about that.”

In the same interview, Oppenheimer also potentially gave the audiences the hope of exploring Stephen and Lydia's story in the upcoming season ahead of its official announcement. She said:

"The goal if we, knock on wood, get Season 2, would still be seeing college. I want to go through all of college. So all the unanswered questions where people are like, ‘How the heck did that come to be?’ We will dive into all of those things: How did Stephen get together with Lydia? Where did his relationship with Diana go?"

She added:

"When was the last time Lucy and Steven actually were together?Because it wasn’t the Hawaiian party. There’s more entanglement. That wasn’t their last breakup, I would say. So yes, I have a lot planned. I was just with some of the writers, and we were brainstorming all this crazy sh*t we could do.”

The first three episodes of Tell Me Lies season 2 are currently streaming on Hulu.
