The Vampire Diaries star Torrey DeVitto opened up about not wanting to return to the show after her divorce from series co-star Paul Wesley. The actress played Town Council member Dr. Meredith Fell in seasons 3 and 4 of the show. Dr. Meredith Fell, who used vampire blood to treat her patients, was also a love interest of Matthew Davis' character Alaric Saltzman.
During an appearance on the July 15 episode of Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen's podcast Broad Ideas, the actress, who was married to Paul Wesley from 2011 to 2013, revealed that she had no intentions of going back for the fifth season following her high-profile divorce. Wesley portrayed Stefan Salvatore in the show.
During the podcast, the actress recalled how her relationship with Wesley was highly publicized due to the popularity of the show. She remembered going through a "really dark time" after her split. Regarding her decision to quit the show, she shared:
"I was [on it], but I only did like six episodes. And then once we were splitting up I was like, 'Pfft, not going back there.'"
She added:
"I'm not that kind of person that's like, 'Well, this is business, I can stay.' It's like, no. I don't want to come back. I'm good, thank you."
Torrey DeVitto conceded that she was not prepared for the attention following the split. The actress was mortified by the scrutiny aimed at her by fans of the show who glamorized Paul Wesley's character but in reality, did not "know him." DeVitto remembered:
"And then it was hard too because for a couple years, anybody that I would date afterwards, people would just [say], 'He's so disgusting. He'll never be [Wesley]. How could you do this?'"
Torrey DeVitto played Dr. Meredith Fell on The Vampire Diaries
Torrey DeVitto portrayed the recurring character Dr. Meredith Fell in the third and fourth seasons of The Vampire Diaries. Meredith was a kind and honest doctor, who was also a member of the town council as she was from the Fell family. The brown-eyed beauty is not easily shaken and maintains her calm when surrounded by adverse situations.
Meredith is also an extremely loyal friend and cares about her patients so much that she even begins giving them vampire blood to help them heal. Central to the third and fourth seasons of the show is Meredith's romantic relationship with Matthew Davis' Alaric Saltzman.
Despite the couple's relationship getting off to a strong start, things immediately fell apart once they started dating and Alaric became The Darkness, his split personality. At one point Alaric even attacked Meredith and left her with serious injuries, to which she would've succumbed if it wasn't for Paul Wesley's Stefan healing her with his own vampire blood.
When Alaric dies in the fourth season, Meredith even gives him sedatives and watches over him for a while before leaving. It is later revealed by a reincarnated Alaric in season six of the show that Meredith moved to Alaska and married an unnamed pediatrician. Torrey DeVitto's character appeared in 12 episodes of the show in total.
Torrey DeVitto is now happily engaged to director Jared LaPine famous for the short films The One That One Likes You, The One That Rolled Away, and Welcome Home. The Pretty Little Liars actress got engaged to the director back in September of last year.
More recently, DeVitto revealed via an Instagram post on Sunday, May 19 that she and LaPine were expecting their first child. She revealed on the social media platform that their baby girl was due to arrive in November.
