When Cobra Kai season 6 returned on Netflix, fans were thrilled. However, they were puzzled by the unexpected release of only five episodes, a departure from the ten-episode format of previous seasons.

The sixth season of Cobra Kai, which premiered on July 18, 2023, marks the final chapter of the beloved series. The reason why only five episodes of the series are available right now is due to the decision to split the season into multiple parts— a part of Netflix's strategy to extend the engagement period and build anticipation for the series finale.

Cobra Kai season 6 starts with 5 episodes

The initial release of Cobra Kai season 6 with just five episodes is a strategic move by Netflix. This approach mirrors the trend of splitting major releases into several parts. Netflix plans to release the concluding season in three installments, each containing five episodes.

The first set of episodes of Cobra Kai season 6 debuted on July 18, and the next batch of episodes of Cobra Kai season 6 is scheduled for release on November 15. The final part of the season, comprising the last five episodes, is slated to stream in 2025, although the exact date has not yet been confirmed.

This staggered release schedule is designed to maximize viewership and keep the audience engaged over a longer period. The gap between the releases allows fans to build anticipation and keeps the series in public conversation. While this might be a departure from the typical Netflix release pattern, it aligns with the platform’s strategy for high-profile shows.

What is Cobra Kai season 6 about?

Cobra Kai is an American television sitcom iteration that serves as a continuation of Robert Mark Kamen’s original film, The Karate Kid. First aired on YouTube Red (now, YouTube Premium) before moving to Netflix, it was created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg.

Ralph Macchio and William Zabka starred in the 1984 film, The Karate Kid, and its subsequent sequels, as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence respectively.

The story of Cobra Kai retells the Karate Kid saga from Johnny Lawrence’s point of view. It starts with Johnny reopening the Cobra Kai karate dojo, which reignites his former conflict with Daniel LaRusso.

Redemption, rivalry, and consequences of past choices in the present are some of the themes addressed by this series. Among others, a strong cast including Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, and Peyton List, feature in it.

Cobra Kai has received acclaim from both critics and viewers for its writing, performances action scenes as well as humor since its release. The show has struck a balance between nostalgia and new content, that appeals to old and new fans alike.

Given that it has garnered high numbers in terms of viewership on YouTube as well as Netflix, it is not surprising that it was nominated at the Emmys for an Outstanding Comedy Series prize— at the 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony.

Netflix has only released the first five episodes of Cobra Kai season 6, with the next episodes slated to be released on November 15, 2024.
