The 2020 murder of Darci Bass's 19-year-old daughter Livye Lewis will be covered in the upcoming episode of 48 Hours. The episode is titled The Blackout Murder of Livye Lewis and it airs on CBS on January 4, at 10 pm ET.
Livye Lewis was killed by her boyfriend Matthew Edgar in October 2020. Edgar, who was arrested in 2020 being the primary suspect in this homicide, was later released on bail as the coronavirus pandemic delayed the legal proceedings. When on bail, he met Darci Bass at a local convenience store.
Darci, who was upset that her daughter's killer was unapprehended, attacked Edgar in the parking lot. Although Edgar managed to flee, he later filed a complaint against Darci, who was then arrested on charges of assault caused by bodily injury, criminal mischief, and retaliation.
Darci Bass was seeking answers
Darci Bass’s 19-year-old daughter Livye Lewis was found dead inside her own car in October 2020, after being shot in the neck. Her boyfriend Matthew Edgar was also sighted at the crime scene, behind the same car in which she was found dead. Edgar also had his rifle with him.
After the murder, Edgar, who was bloodied but not injured in any way was taken to the hospital. Upon interrogation, he claimed that he did not remember how he ended up at the scene of the crime and also sobbed when he heard that his lover was dead.
However, Edgar was arrested at the hospital in 2020 for the murder of Livye Lewis. He was later released on bail as the pandemic delayed the court proceedings. Months after his release, he met Darci Bass at her store. Darci who was devastated by Livye Lewis’s murder wanted answers from the then-alleged killer.
Darci Bass chased Edgar down to the parking lot after which she attacked his windshield with a chain. After this incident, Edgar filed a complaint against Bass. She was charged with "assault caused by bodily injury, retaliation, and criminal mischief", and also went behind bars. However, the charges were later dropped.
Bass told CBS about the incident and how she wanted answers from Matthew Edgar:
"She loved you and she was good to you and your kids and to your family. What made you think that this was the answer to anything that was going on?"
Darci Bass no longer holds hatred for Matthew Edgar
Matthew Edgar was eventually found guilty of the murder of Livye Lewis on March 16, 2021, and sentenced to 99 years in prison with chances of parole after 30 years.
Although Edgar managed to flee by draining his ankle monitor of charge, he was later arrested in December 2021 and moved to the Byrd unit, where he remains incarcerated to date.
At court, Bass, who was present during the sentencing of Matthew Edgar said that she no longer holds hatred for her daughter's killer.
She said:
"I [Darci Bass] hope God wraps him [Matthew Edgar] around his arms. At first, I had so much hate and everything, but I've gotten over that. I look back now, and I think things were for a reason. Livye lived her life."
