Daredevil: Born Again is set to bring the Devil of Hell's Kitchen back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the journey wasn't easy to get to. As revealed in 2024, the show received a massive creative overhaul, which saw original writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman being replaced by showrunner Dario Scarpadane. Now, Daredevil actor Charlie Cox is revealing exactly why the show received an overhaul.
Talking to SFX Magazine about Daredevil: Born Again, Cox explained that the show's original vision just wasn't working with Marvel Studios. The actor explained that following the actors' and writers' strike, Marvel did a hard turn on the series' original direction and retooled it so that it could retain the classic feeling of the original Daredevil.
“There was a U-turn after the strike, where we were headed in one direction which was interesting and valid,” Cox said. “The argument was, if we’re coming back after all these years, we don’t want to just do exactly the same thing. Marvel looked at the episodes and knew it wasn’t quite working.”
Charlie Cox also gave Marvel Studios props for being able to pull the show off, given how big of a feat it was, and revealed that a whole new pilot was shot.
"They shot a whole new pilot, and they reorganized what [they] had filmed to make it feel more like the show [they] had shot all those years previously," Cox revealed. "Given what a Herculean task that was, it’s very impressive what they achieved."
Showrunner Dario Scarpadane explains Daredevil: Born Again's connection with Netflix series
In the same interview, showrunner Dario Scarpadane explained exactly how Daredevil: Born Again will be connected to the Netflix series. He explained that the last time fans saw the characters of Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page, they decided to go into business together. The upcoming Marvel series pretty much opens with that dream.
“At the very end of the Netflix show, Foggy, Karen and Matt had a dream written out on the back of a napkin,” Scardapane said. “We start with that dream. It’s not a dream that needs too much explanation; three good friends go into business together.”
Originally, Daredevil: Born Again wasn't intended to be a direct continuation of the Netflix series. The characters of Foggy Nelson and Karen Page weren't set to appear. However, the overhaul changed everything. This sees the return of Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll in their respective roles, alongside some other characters.
What is Daredevil: Born Again about?
The upcoming Marvel series will feature Daredevil's return to the small screens. The show will once again pit Matt Murdock against Wilson Fisk as he has become the mayor of New York City. The official synopsis for the series reads:
