David Johnson shares why he left Industry Season 3
David Jonsson’s decision to leave Industry Season 3 came as a shock to many, given the critical acclaim and viewer admiration his character Gus had garnered throughout the series. In the interview with British GQ, Jonsson laid bare the reasons behind his departure.
Apart from the scheduling conflict, Jonsson elaborated on his deep connection to Industry, a series that marked a major phase in his career transitioning from theatre to television.
"Let me just be very, very clear: I love that show, and (before it), all I did was theatre. It was very deliberate.
"I got some offers to do TV, and then the first show that I actually really wanted to do was Industry, and then we did it, and it becomes its own thing, and it has its own fanbase, and I love that. And the people on it, I love — they’re my real friends," he shared on the interview.
Yet, as is often the case in the ever changing world of acting, the need to explore new artistic avenues and prevent typecasting played a crucial role in his decision to exit. Jonsson was candid about the potential pitfalls of being pigeonholed into a character profile.
"It's very easy, isn't it, for people to just see you as a character, and then you move through your career, and people go, that's — yeah, it's that character.
"And I'm like, no, no, that's not the kind of actor that I am," he said, raising a common concern among actors seeking to diversify their roles and challenge themselves with different roles.
Despite his departure from Industry Season 3, Jonsson doesn't close the door on potentially returning to the series, but his current focus is on looking for new opportunities.
"I dunno. I dunno. We’ll see. I barely know what I’m gonna have for breakfast, mate," suggesting a take-it-as-it-comes approach.
