The Emmy Awards 2024 has been confusing for the fans as generally, viewers get to see one season of the award show every year. However, this time in the history of the Emmy Awards, there have been two award functions in the same year on January 15, 2024, and September 15, 2024, with a gap of just nine months.
The reason behind the two Emmy Awards 2024 is the delayed 75th season of the awards, which was supposed to take place in 2023. Every year the function is celebrated around early to mid-September but it got delayed because of the two major strikes back to back in the last year.
The strikes were conducted by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) which were then called “double strike” as both the writers and actors went on strike together. Ever since the delay in 2001 due to the 9/11 attacks in New York, this has been the first time that the Emmy Awards have been delayed.

What strikes led to the delay of the Emmy Awards 2024
The reason behind the two Emmy Awards 2024 is the massive strike in Hollywood in 2023. Usually, the Emmy Awards take place in early to mid-September. But the 75th awards had to be moved because of the strikes. They were supposed to happen in September 2023, but they got delayed until January 15, 2024.
The strikes were held by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) which is the association of 11,000 screenwriters and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) which represents 150,000 media personnel.
Both unions initiated their strikes after failing to reach agreements with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The disputes revolved around issues such as pay, residuals for streaming content, and protections against artificial intelligence in creative work.
Impacts of the Hollywood Double Strike
The Hollywood double strike had significant impacts throughout the entertainment industry. The WGA strike went on for 148 days, and the SAG-AFTRA strike lasted 118 days, which was the first time both unions were on strike at the same time since 1960.
These work stoppages led to the cancellation and delay of several major productions such as movies like Dune Part 2 and Deadpool 3. As per the data recorded by Deadline, the strikes caused financial losses of over $6 billion, affecting more than 40,000 industry workers who either lost their jobs or faced disruptions.
This also affected cultural events, like award shows including the 75th Emmy Awards, which was then moved to January 2024, and became the first time the Emmys to be rescheduled since 2001, after the 9/11 attacks.
Despite these issues, the 75th Emmy Awards in 2024 successfully, recognized shows like Succession and The Bear and highlighted progress in diversity and inclusion in the industry.
The 76th season, which is the Emmy Awards 2024, has now been organized at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on September 15, 2024, recognizing shows and dramas like Shogun and The Bear.
The Emmy Awards 2024 begin at 5 p.m. Pacific/8 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday and is expected to last around three hours. Fans can watch the show live on ABC and later it will be available to watch on Hulu beginning on Monday.
