Little Fires Everywhere season 2, as per multiple reports, has little chance of seeing the light of day. This 8-episode miniseries premiered on Hulu on March 18, 2020, and is based on the 2017 novel of the same name.

The first season of the series already exhausts the storyline of the source material. Additionally, showrunner Liz Tigelaar has stated to Entertainment Weekly that it is a “close-ended story”. Also, the plot and character elements already come full circle in season 1.

Due to the reasons listed above, Little Fires Everywhere season 2 is not a viable possibility. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington in prominent roles, this series is available for streaming on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+Hotstar.

Little Fires Everywhere season 2 is not a realistic possibility

On April 22, 2020, when asked about a sequel, Liz Tigelaar, the showrunner of the series, told Entertainment Weekly the following:

“In my heart, I feel like this is what it's always been, which is a limited series. It's a show with a beginning, middle, and an end. Everything burns down."

Tigelaar added:

“This is a close-ended story to me and we've ended it where it ends."

The first season already uses up the full plot of the novel. Further, fans of the first season would know that Little Fires Everywhere season 2 would not be a good idea since the first season brings the various strands of the story to an adequate conclusion.

For instance, the relationship between Elena Richardson and her youngest daughter, Izzy, reaches a dramatic conclusion as the pent-up rage and animosity between the two are channeled in the form of the climactic fire that burns down their house.

Izzy runs away from her home and her mother sets off to track her down. Technically, Little Fires Everywhere season 2 could continue this strand. However, it is uncertain what direction that would take, since the book ends here.

Moreover, the relationship between Mia and her daughter, Pearl, is also given a neat ending, as the two pack up once again and set for Mia’s parents’ place so that they can see their granddaughter for the first time. It is hinted in the finale that Izzy is trying to find and reach out to them. However, that bit of the story is left unresolved.

The subplot of Mirabelle McCullough aka May Ling also gets its conclusion, as the finale shows Bebe sneaking into the McCulloughs’ home to steal her baby back, after having lost the case in court.

The relationship between the four Richardson siblings, Lexie, Izzy, Moody, and Trip, is also brought to a conclusive end as they confront the abusive Elena, and take the side of the ill-treated Izzy.

Fire is a recurring motif in the series. The titular little fires are seen everywhere in the relationships depicted in the story. In the end, a literal huge fire consumes Elena's household. The total and cleansing effect of the fire also points to the impossibility of a Little Fires Everywhere season 2.

Little Fires Everywhere: A brief recap

The series revolves around Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon) and Mia Warren (Kerry Washington) and their families. Mia and her teenage daughter, Pearl, move to Shaker Heights, Ohio, during the late 1990s and find a place to stay thanks to Elena. Gradually, their families become connected in various ways.

The series explores various aspects of motherhood as both Elena and Mia struggle to communicate with their respective daughters, Izzy and Pearl. At the same time, there are bonds that form outside the family which provide the characters comfort.

A major subplot of the series concerns Bebe Chow and her daughter May Ling, whom the former initially abandons at a fire station because she is too poor to raise her. The finale brings the various tensions among the characters to head, as the climactic fire engulfs the house of the Richardsons. Narratively speaking, season 1 leaves very little room for a Little Fires Everywhere season 2.
