Fans shouldn't raise hopes for What We Do in the Shadows season 7 because the series was confirmed to end with season 6 in December 2023. The award-winning series aired its sixth and final season between October 21, 2024, and December 16, 2024.
Created by Jemaine Clement, the comedy horror series first premiered on FX on March 27, 2019. It is based on Clement's 2014 film of the same name, which he co-wrote with Taika Waititi. The series is produced by Joanne Toll, Hartley Gorenstein, Kyle Newacheck, and Derek S. Rappaport
The mockumentary series features the vampires Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) living together as roommates in Staten Island along with Nandor's human familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén). It follows their adventures as they adjust to living in the present time while being filmed by a documentary crew.
The show's official synopsis, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:
"A look at the lives of four vampires who've lived together for hundreds of years on Staten Island. The self-appointed leader of the group is Nandor the Relentless, a warrior and conqueror from the Ottoman Empire. Then there's the British vampire Laszlo -- a bit of a rogue and a dandy and a fop, he might say."
It continues:
"He's a lover of mischief and a soirée, but not as much as he loves seeing Nandor fail in every attempt. And then there's Nadja: the seductress, the temptress, the vampiric Bonnie to Laszlo's Clyde. Also cohabiting in the vampire household is Guillermo, Nandor's familiar; Colin Robinson, an energy vampire and day-walker of sorts -- he feasts on humans, but not on their blood."
Why is What We Do in the Shadows season 7 not happening?
The reason What We Do in the Shadows season 7 is not happening is that the series concluded with its sixth season, airing its finale episode on December 16, 2024. FX's chairman, John Landgraf, told the FX's TCA panel in February 2024 that the series reached its "natural conclusion" after six years.
"The show came to a natural conclusion. It was a great six year run."
The actor Matt Berry, who played Laszlo Cravensworth on the show, also chimed in on why What We Do in the Shadows season 7 is not in the works by saying:
"It’s kind of the perfect time, I think. It's coming to the end and it’s as good as it ever was, and that’s all you ever want."
The series bid farewell to the four Staten Island vampires by tying up all the loose ends by the end of season 6. It also resolved one of the lingering plot lines involving Guillermo's dream of being a vampire.
He fulfilled his dream in What We Do In The Shadows season 5, only to realize that it's not what he truly wanted. Guillermo could not get himself to feast on humans and decided to regain his humanity in the season 5 finale.
What We Do in the Shadows season 6 marked the end of the vampire mockumentary
What We Do in the Shadows season 6 featured 11 episodes and continued to follow the antics of the four vampires and their human familiar, Guillermo. While getting filmed for a documentary, each character overcame their own challenges throughout the season's run.
In the series finale episode, the documentary crew abruptly decided to wrap up filming by saying they had all the footage they needed. The vampires agreed that they learned nothing new about themselves over the course of filming the documentary. The only character that experienced significant growth was Guillermo, who left the house at the end of the series to make a fresh start on his own.
Although What We Do in the Shadows season 7 is not going to happen, fans can enjoy the award-winning series by streaming seasons 1 to 6 on Hulu.
